Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

As a reminder there is no school tomorrow, Thursday, October 3rd as it is a school holiday for Rosh Hashanah. Shanah tovah to our Jewish community. And Friday, October 4 is a teacher workday and school is closed for students.

Ms. Heiman and I are hosting a Family Academy on Wednesday, October 9th from 7:00-8:00 pm in the Ravensworth Library.  Come learn more about the Virginia Literacy Plan and our new curriculum, Benchmark Advance.  We will have childcare provided for our school-aged students during this time.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Three Hour Early Release, Monday October 21st

early dismissal 3h

As we move into October, we will be planning for our next 3-hour early release on Monday, October 21, 2024.

Our plan is to dismiss students in the same way that they were dismissed in September unless we hear that you would like to make a change. You can let us know by contacting the school office at 703-426-3600 by Wednesday, October 16th.  We will send out confirmations by October 17, 2024.

As a reminder, SACC will be open at 12:20 pm for those students who are already enrolled in this program.

FCPS Cell Phone Policy

No cell phones1

📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy

Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions!

If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call 703-426-3600.

Grades K-6

  • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.

Walk, Bike & Roll to School, Oct 9th

bike to school

Get ready for Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on October 9th! Walking and biking to school benefits both the students and the community in several ways. Students who walk and bike get more physical activity, have more time to socialize with their friends, and develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. The community benefits from reduced pollution and traffic congestion. We encourage participants to plan a safe route in advance. A fun way to celebrate this day is to form a “walking train” with other Ravensworth friends!  We are only encouraging students who live in the Ravensworth area (non-bus riders) to participate in this event because of potential dangers of walking next to major roads.  We are also encouraging family members to walk with their child to school on this day.

Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Attendance2

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. The 3-hour Early Release Mondays are a great time to make appointments.  If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Free Immunizations for All FCPS Students

vaccination

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost! Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s). The immunization clinics are being held at Frost Middle School on:

  • Tuesday, October 8, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students under the age of 19, with a scheduled appointment and parental consent, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 19.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 in order to provide consent.

Transportation services are also available. Please visit our Immunization Resources webpage for details.

No U-Turns and Blocking Our Neighbors’ Driveways

Drop Off safety

U-Turns on Nutting are both illegal and very, very dangerous.  We continue to get reports of cars making these illegal U-Turns.  The safety of our school community is compromised every time someone does this. Please take the time to use Kiss-n-Ride and/or find another route. Please be mindful of our neighbors’ driveways by not blocking them.  Thank you!
