EHS Eagle Takes Flight - Literally!
Alex Lammers (11th grade) recently obtained his student pilot certification and successfully completed his first solo flight. To achieve this, students are required to complete written coursework (ground school) and also in-air instruction on aerodynamics, weight and balance calculations, weather, navigation, communications systems, and more.
As Alex continues his flight training, he is now working on cross-country flights and then instrumentation certification. He is determined to earn his private pilot license as soon as he is eligible (age 17 - June 2025). His ultimate goal is to pursue a career in commercial aviation as a pilot.
The teachers at Edison have played a vital role in Alex's success, preparing him to communicate effectively, be prepared, be confident, and take prudent risks—qualities that are just as important in the cockpit as they are in the classroom.
Alex takes lessons out of Potomac Airfield through Aero Elite, which is a program that was co-founded by FCPS School Board member Kyle McDaniel.

Good afternoon, Edison Eagles!
I hope everyone had a great week! As we head into the weekend, I want to send a huge thank you to our custodial staff. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated team who work tirelessly to keep our building a clean, safe, and welcoming place for all of us. Your hard work does not go unnoticed, and we truly appreciate everything you do to make Edison a great place to learn and work.
Tonight, we have an exciting event: our Blue Out football game against Lewis High School! This is not just any game; it’s our Deck Victory Bowl, where we will honor the memory of our late colleague, Sherman Deck. In addition, it’s Feeder Night, and we can’t wait to welcome our future Eagles to the field! Be sure to arrive by 6:30 p.m. to join in on the fun. The first 150 kids will receive a special Future Eagle T-shirt, and we’ll have Eagle tattoos and games in the End Zone for everyone to enjoy. It’s going to be a fantastic night!
Looking ahead, please note that PSAT/SAT Day is coming up on October 9th. Only students who are testing—10th and 11th graders for the PSAT, and 12th graders who signed up for the SAT—need to attend school that day. 9th graders and all other 12th graders will have assignments to complete from home. Please mark your calendars!
Finally, if you haven’t already, please check your email from September 30th for a message with the subject line "Please complete the FCPS Cell Phone Pilot Student Survey." We would love to hear your feedback about our cell phone policy, and your input is essential in helping us move forward. We need everyone’s voice, so please take a few minutes to complete the survey!
Thank you for your continued support of Edison High School. I hope to see you all tonight at the game—Go Eagles!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Amanda Burke Principal
