- October 14th - Indigenous People's Day, Student Holiday
Ms. Jewell and Ms. Luerssen were thrilled to represent our school at an event hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea on Wednesday evening to celebrate Korean National Day & Armed Forces Day. It was a beautiful celebration with delicious food, K-pop dancers, cultural performances, and inspiring speeches. It was an honor to have the opportunity to attend this annual event and represent our school community!
Shanah Tovah to our Jewish community celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year! Meaning “head of the year,” Rosh Hashanah is one of Judaism’s holiest days and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection that ends with Yom Kippur.
Warmly, Ms. Luerssen

This year we will be partnering doing a snowman or winter scene contest in January in place of our October pumpkin character contest. Students who wish to participate will use things from nature and/or recycled materials to create a snowman sculpture or a Winter scene. More information about this contest will go out before Winter break
We are excited to announce that our Annual Kindergarten Book Character Day Parade will be held on October 31st at 9:40 AM.
Kindergarteners are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character. Costumes must be school-appropriate and cannot include toy weapons. Costumes are permitted for kindergarten only.
Parents of kindergarteners are invited to join us by lining the sidewalk along the Kiss & Ride parking lot. The students will parade around the exterior of the building, where they will be cheered on by all of our students and parents.
We are asking for donations from community members, businesses and organizations to help offset the cost of a trip our 6th grade Korean Immersion Program students will take to South Korea in April 2025.
How Might You Help?
Please make your tax-deductible donation to Colin Powell ES, and note in the memo section of your check “6th Grade Capstone Trip to Korea.” The school’s Federal Tax ID Number is: 54-0805373.
Please send donations to: Colin Powell Elementary School, Attention: EJ Cho, 13340 Leland Road, Centreville, Virginia 20120.
You can also donate through MySchoolBucks by clicking the link below:
By supporting our students through a donation, you will receive a letter acknowledging your tax-deductible donation. In addition:
- Students will take a banner on the trip to South Korea thanking our sponsors. We will post photos of the group with the banner throughout the trip.
- Donors will receive a group photo from the trip with the banner and a thank you letter from our students.
- We will recognize all donors in the school’s Puma Press and on social media.
Our Trip
This cohort of students has the opportunity to put into practice all they have learned over the past seven years about the Korean language and culture through a Capstone Learning Experience Trip to South Korea over Spring Break.
The cost of the trip is $4,700 per student. While the price is reasonable for an all-inclusive guided trip, we do not want it to be cost-prohibitive for families. All donations the school receives will be divided equally among the students to help pay for the trip.

If you have any questions or would like further information about donations, contact EJ Cho, Assistant Principal at echo1@fcps.edu or 571-522-6000.
