Message from Mrs. Castillo

Freaky Friday

Thank you for another week of support our lions and amazing teachers. The first week of autumn was cloudy and wet, but there was lots of learning going on in our classrooms!  Friday was extra fun as we all wore silly socks to celebrate September birthdays.

We were so appreciative of our families' flexibility during our Early Release Monday. The extra time allowed our teachers to begin their 27-hour course focused on the Virginia Literacy Act and supporting our students' early literacy. Without this protected time, our teachers would not be able to engage with this material. Thank you!

Join us for our Principals' Coffee Tomorrow at 8:15 AM in the cafeteria.  Mrs. Straw will share about the advanced academic programs available to students in Fairfax County from Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.  Participants will also hear from members of our PTA board and have a chance to ask questions of the administrators.  Coffee and light refreshments will be available.

Finally, thank you to everyone who joined Movie Night on Friday!  It was well attended and a great evening celebrating the amazing Lemon Road community.  Have a great week!

Second Step SEL Curriculum

Second Step

This week, all classes will begin our new Social Emotional Learning curriculum as a part of morning meeting.  In Kindergarten - Fifth Grade, classes will begin Unit 1 on Growth Mindset and Goal Setting.  This week's lesson will focus on demonstrating ways we can pay attention.  In Sixth Grade, classes will begin Unit 1 on Mindsets and Goals where they will describe what happens in their brains when they try something new and how their brains change with experience and practice.  Be sure to ask your lion about their first lesson this week!

Congratulations SCA Officers

Last week, fifth and sixth grade lions ran for officer positions as a part of our student government.  We are so proud of everyone who ran.  The posters, speeches, and campaigns were meaningful and required bravery!  On Friday, the following students were elected into office - congratulations!

  • President: Max Caddy
  • Vice President: Sage Thompson
  • Treasurer: Zach Shook
  • Secretary: Brooklyn Castillo
  • Historian: Cailya Ko

FCPS Attendance Policies

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and use weekends and school holidays. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent and will be contacted by the School Social Worker or other staff to create a  plan for improved attendance.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence to the front office.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
