Scoliosis Information and Fact Sheet

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. A spine affected by scoliosis has a sideways curve, making it appear more like an "S" or a "C" than a straight line. Untreated scoliosis can lead to limited motion, back pain, deformity, and in extreme cases, impaired function of the heart and lungs. Early detection and treatment may prevent scoliosis from progressing.  Please follow this link for more information on diagnosing and treating Scoliosis.

Counselor Corner

Important updates and resources from the student services department.

  1. GRADE ALERT. As we have observed, many young people (and some older ones, too!) tend to procrastinate. When it comes to academics and grades, that is not a good thing but middle school students are still learning that, of course.  We are now past the half-way point of the quarter and our new middle school students are hopefully adjusting to requirements.  Since they came from elementary school where there was a lot of handholding and reminders, it is an adjustment.  That’s where parents/guardians, those with wisdom and experience, are key.  There are a number of students with failing grades at this point and our hope is they will learn what they can do differently to raise those grades.  We do not offer “extra credit” for panicked students desperately trying to raise a grade at the last minute.  The quarter ends on October 31, leaving five weeks for new habits and progress where needed.

So…parents/guardians (key players and the BEST influencers), we suggest the following:

  • Review your students’ grades in SIS ParentVue or SIS StudentVue, whichever you use. Look at grades and missing assignments.  If an access issue, in middle school contact Mrs. Knowlton, our Registrar.
  • Talk with your student about what you see, and if a grade is low, ask them what they need to do
  • Ensure your students have a regular time and place to study on school nights. If they need help on setting up a study plan, help them do that and/or have them talk with their counselor for help.
  • Ask how much they are using RAISE (53 minutes available every Gold day, an opportunity to do work or ask a teacher questions). The more they do in RAISE, the less to do at home.
  • Contact teachers or better yet, encourage your student to talk with their teachers. Counselors can help them practice as needed.
  • Your counselors are available to collaborate with you and your students.

We are all in this together for your students!

  1. Teacher reports. Sometimes, parents/guardians get a bad report from their student on a teacher. We always hope the first action a parent/guardian is to go into investigative mode.  Those of us with children can attest, as perfect as our children were, they sometimes leave out part of the narrative (usually the part which points to their action, human nature!). After you empathize with your unhappy student and resisting the temptation to promise them you will solve this, the first step is to calmly contact the teacher and ask for what they experienced.  Then you can proceed.  Before you contact someone else, your adult-to-adult conversation with the teacher is how is best handled.  (Secret from counselors:  when a teacher brings concerns about a student to a counselor, we ask:  “Have you contacted the parent?”  So this is the reverse. Before you jump on a horse based on a statement from a young adolescent, the first question you may be asked (or should be) is “Have I (You) talked with the teacher?”

We are all on the same team.  Of course, this note does not apply to anyone with a perfect child.  😊

  1. Thomas Jefferson Information Night!

Please join us on October 10th at 6:30 PM in the Recital Hall for an information session with a representative from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, regarding the admissions process.

  1. Teen Burnout Prevention. We found this article which may be of interest. This is from a source outside FCPS and does not imply FCPS endorsement of the agency from whom it came.

The Student Services staff is here to help you in any way we can.  Please note that students cannot leave class or lunch to see their counselor without an appointment and a pass.  If they need assistance, we encourage them to email our Student Services staff to request an appointment.  If there is an emergency, their teacher will call the subschool office for assistance.
