Haycock Hello 9.30.24

movie

Dear Haycock Families,

It was great to see many of you at Movie Night on Friday evening.  Many thanks to our wonderful PTA for putting on a great family evening complete with movie, face painting, balloon creations, popcorn, and pizza.  It was a wonderful event that allowed us to connect and have fun together.

Ms. O'Hair, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART), presented on Wednesday evening about Advanced Academics Program (AAP) services in FCPS and at Haycock.  Here are the slides from her presentation for your reference.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

FCPS School Calendar 2024-25

2nd Grade Cognitive Ability Testing

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be administered to all our second grade students the mornings of October 16, 17 and 18.

The CogAT measures students’ reasoning abilities in verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal areas. Note that this assessment is not a test that requires any preparation, as it is designed to assess a child’s natural thinking and problem-solving skills. Please ensure your child is well-rested and arrives on time to school.

First Quarter Parent Conferences

All K-6 classroom teachers will be offering quarter 1 conferences.  You should hear from your child's teacher about sign up times.  November 4 and 5 are being set aside for these parent-teacher conferences.

To guide this conference and familiarize yourself with the quarterly progress report, a copy of a blank progress report is available in multiple languages. Family-facing curriculum resources are also available on the FCPS website. Teachers will also discuss VLA Reading Plans with guardians whose children qualify for these interventions.

Kindergarten teachers will not assign grades at the end of the first grading period but will instead include comments on student progress reports which focus on citizenship skills, routines, and an intervention support comment (EIRI) is available, if necessary.  Kindergarten teachers will share information about VLA Reading Plans with guardians whose children qualify for these interventions.

Next 3-Hour Early Release Monday is 10/28

Our first three hour early release Monday went smoothly.  The most challenging part of our plan to ensure all students were safe and accounted for was last minute change requests from parents. For the October 28 early release Monday, we ask that all change requests from parents be made no later than the end of the day on Friday, October 25.

We understand that SACC will be providing supervision for the October 28th three hour early release Monday, and we will factor that into our plans.

We will send out confirmation emails to all parents the week of October 7th with our understanding of your plan for your student for the October 28 early release day.  There will be a form included in that email for you to indicate a change in plans if needed. If we do not hear back from you, we will assume that your plans for your student(s) remain the same as the plan for the September 23 early release Monday.

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpagefor additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Haycock Family Engagement Survey Results

All families were sent a Family Engagement Survey last spring.  We had 178 families respond to this survey.  Here are the survey results for your reference.  We take this feedback seriously and have incorporated what you said into our plans for this year.

The items that we were highest on included the following:

  • My child feels physically safe at school
  • This school is safe, meaning it provides an environment where
students and staff are free from emotional or physical harm.
  • This school values the diversity of its community.
  • I feel regular school attendance supports my child's academic
    success.
  • There are opportunities for me to volunteer at my child’s school.

We put a priority on our partnership with parents and families.  Please reach out to one of the administrators or our family liaison, Paulette Farmakides, if you have questions or suggestions regarding family engagement at Haycock.

Free Immunizations for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost! Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s). The immunization clinics are being held at Frost Middle School on:

  • Tuesday, October 8, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students under the age of 19, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 19.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 in order to provide consent.

Parents may learn more about FCPS school-required immunizations

FCPS Cares

The FCPS CARES Program allows parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees who go above and beyond to help others and show they care about their students, colleagues, and the community. We invite you to submit a story below to acknowledge the great work of an FCPS employee or group of employees who should receive FCPS CARES recognition.
