We want to give a big thank you to our counseling staff and social-emotional wellness team for getting Woodburn’s Second Step curriculum up and running. The final day of September (Monday) will mark the first formal day that each classroom will be taking their social emotional wellness to focused level. All classes in kindergarten through fifth grade will begin their journey with Emotion Management. Our sixth graders, on the cusp of their middle school experiences, will begin with a unit entitled “Managing Relationships & Social Conflict.” No matter the learning environment, we couldn’t ask for a stronger group of educators to lead our Wildcats through this work. Enjoy your weekend, stay dry, and thank you for everything you’re doing for our Wildcat Community.
Together We Grow,
Kelley and Matt

Second Step Launches this Week!
This week we will be launching our Second Step Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program! This program will include one lesson each week, focusing on essential skills to develop students socially and emotionally.
We’ll kick off with our unit on Emotion Management, where students will learn to recognize and regulate their emotions effectively. Updates via Talking Points will be sent to families to keep you informed about what your child is learning and how you can support these skills at home.
Thank you for your support as we work together to foster a positive and supportive school environment!

Save the Date: PTA Read-a-Thon
Woodburn PTA is excited to host a read-a-thon that will take place during the month of October! Each student will have their own fundraising page through the 99pledges platform where donors can donate a flat amount or make a donation per minute of reading. Reading logs will be distributed to each student to track their minutes and will be collected on 10/31/24. The grade that fundraises the most money will win a pizza party in early November! Let's get reading!

Today staff and students wore hats in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. They learned about Ellie's Hats, an organization founded in honor of a Woodburn alumni. Ellie's Hats mission is to bring smiles to children with cancer by providing hats to hospitals and clinics so children can pick their favorite hat. Thank you for participating with us today!
Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events
Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.
When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.
Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
