Good afternoon, Edison Eagles!
This week was filled with opportunities to connect and celebrate our Edison community.
It was great seeing our senior parents at Senior Night on Tuesday. Hearing about the supports for senior year, including homecoming, graduation, and prom, reminded me how exciting this year will be for our seniors! We’re all in for a memorable year ahead.
I also enjoyed connecting with our parents at the PTSA meeting, and it was a great bonus to have some of our students join the conversation. Hearing your insights is so valuable, and I appreciate everyone’s participation and engagement.
On Wednesday, we hosted a Club Fair for our 9th graders and students new to Edison, providing them with an opportunity to explore different ways to get involved and connect with the school. I hope everyone found something they’re excited about and ready to dive into!
Additionally, I had a wonderful time talking with parents at the Parent Coffee this past Wednesday. For those who couldn’t attend, don’t worry—we are aiming to host monthly coffees, and I look forward to more opportunities to connect.
Wednesday was also a special day for our golf seniors, as we celebrated their hard work and accomplishments over the past four years. Congratulations to all our golf seniors for your dedication!
Looking ahead, on Monday, all parents, students, and staff will receive an email to participate in a survey about our cell phone policy. Your feedback is crucial, and I encourage everyone to take a moment to share their thoughts and help shape our policy moving forward.
On October 2nd, we will celebrate Custodial Staff Appreciation Day. Our custodial staff works tirelessly to ensure our building is clean and safe, creating a positive learning environment for everyone. We couldn’t do our jobs without them, so if you’re at the school, please take a moment to thank a custodian for their hard work.
As a reminder, there will be no school for students on October 3rd and 4th. On October 4th, we will host our Feeder Night and the Deck Bowl football game, where we will honor the late Sherman Deck for his contributions to both the Edison and Lewis communities. Our feeder school students will also have the chance to run the field before the game, and we look forward to seeing everyone there to support our Eagles!
Thank you all for a great week, and have a wonderful weekend!
Go, Eagles!
Amanda Burke Principal
All 10th and 11th grade students should be in attendance on October 9 to take the PSAT. Only seniors who already signed up for the SAT should report to school that day. All other seniors will have an unscheduled day and do not report to school. Registration for the SAT has closed, and we cannot accept any late registrations at this point.
All 9th graders, except those who participate in our adapted curriculum program, will have an unscheduled day and should stay at home on October 9.

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Kayla Callister, our school psychologist at kcallister@fcps.edu, to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Their therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.
Students may be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect families with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.
