September 25 Family Newsletter

Dear Union Mill Families,

Tomorrow we will be hosting our PTA Fun Run at Union Mill. We have been closely monitoring the field conditions and weather throughout the week. At this time, we will hold the event outside as scheduled. If conditions deteriorate this evening or tomorrow, we will shift to a "Glow Run" inside the gym.

If we need to shift the run inside, we will send out communication to the community. Having the event inside would require us to adjust the schedule and spectators would not be allowed due to space and capacity limits of the gym.

Please ensure your child wears sneakers and proper attire for tomorrow's run. All students will receive an official Union Mill Fun Run T-Shirt Tomorrow.

PBL in Ms. Lee's Class

This morning in Ms. Lee’s class, students were introduced to the Ecosystem  Project. They used their background knowledge and Portrait of a Graduate skills to communicate and collaborate on defining ecosystems. Students discussed how animals survive in different ecosystems, focusing on adaptations and predator-prey dynamics. After reviewing examples, students began their research using classroom resources, books, and online tools!

Walk & Roll to School Day

ta

The fall National Walk and Roll to School Day is on Wednesday, October 9th. Walking or rolling (on a bike, scooter, etc.) is a great way to start your day with a physical activity, which helps get blood flowing and gets your brain ready to learn. It is also good for the environment. We understand not all students live close enough to walk or roll to school. These students can still participate by walking or rolling to their bus stop. All students who participate will get their name put up on the gym wall. Please take this as an opportunity to get some physical movement as a family and join your child on their walk or roll to school trip. If you have any further questions, please reach out to one of the PE teachers: Michelle Orban (morban1@fcps.edu), Jenny Murray (jbmurray@fcps.edu), Manda Tirado (mktirado@fcps.edu). Thank you for your support!

Upcoming Spirit Days

Our Union Mill Bears have worked hard to meet their log in and fundraising goals for our Fun Run and have earned two upcoming spirit days.

Wednesday, October 2nd - Sports Jersey / Activewear Day

Friday, October 11th - Pajama Day

Advanced Academics Overview

We have two upcoming parent information sessions regarding Advanced Academics. In addition, click here to checkout the Fall Newsletter

Full Time Services Screening Process

Join Mrs. Paris-Hutchens our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher on Thursday, October 10th  at 5:45 pm for a presentation of information on the FCPS Full Time Screening process for referrals due December 15th. This session will include information on the school’s role in Full Time Screening, optional parent contributions to the screening portfolio, and the holistic screening process itself.

FLE Parent Preview

You are invited to attend an evening session to preview the Family Life Education (FLE) media and lessons, and to engage in conversation with school staff about the program. The meeting will take place on Thursday, October 10 at 5:15 pm in Room 108. During this time, all program materials and media for every grade level will be available for your review.

Parents/guardians who do not wish for their child to participate in FLE instruction can opt them out of any or all lessons. For students in general education classes, opt-out forms are available through the Parent Digital Consent (PDC). For students in special education or those using the modified FLE lessons for the 2024-2025 school year, a paper opt-out form is required. These forms can be accessed at: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/curriculum/subject-area/family-life-education-fle/fle-opt-out-request-forms.

If you decide to opt your child out but later wish for them to participate, please notify the school principal or assistant principal in writing before instruction begins in December.
