As the new Director of Student Services, I have been inspired by and enjoyed meeting all of our students, staff, and families at the back to school events! Annandale High School is truly a special place, full of amazing students.
Every 1-2 weeks, I'll be sending this newsletter to inform you about upcoming opportunities, Student Services programming, and events to support your students academic, career, and social-emotional growth.

Upcoming Events
Senior Parent Night, Thursday, September 26 (6-8pm)
Join us to learn about various postsecondary options and what seniors can do now to prepare. Representatives from 4-year universities, community college, trade, and military will speak about their opportunities. Students and parents will be given the opportunity to ask the speakers questions.

World Language Credit Exam - Register by October 4
Does your student speak, read, and write in a language other than English? If so, they may be eligible to earn high school credit through the World Languages Credit By Exam. This exam allows students to earn credits to help fulfill requirements for the Advanced Studies Diploma and Virginia's Seal of Biliteracy.
If your student would like to register for the World Languages Credit By Exam, please complete this form by September 27 and your counselor will reach out to you to schedule your registration. Students need parent permission to take the test. Please print and sign the testing permission form and return it to your student’s counselor. If you have any questions, please contact Jacquelyn Costa. Counselors must complete the registration by October 4 in order for it to be accepted.

PSAT/SAT School Day, Wednesday, October 9
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024 Hayfield will host the digital Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) for all 10th and 11th grade students, and the School Day SAT for all 12th grade students who previously registered.
Due to testing space and staffing needs, 9th grade students will not report to school on October 9th. Grade 12 students who did not register for the SAT should not report to school on October 9th as well, and all Academy classes will be canceled that day.
College Fair and Look to the Future Events (HS)
The 2024 College Fair will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at George Mason University’s Eagle Bank Arena from 4:00 - 6:30 pm. Approximately 220 colleges and universities will be represented, including two and four-year colleges and US Service Academies. Following the fair, the Two-Night Postsecondary Virtual Event will be held on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm.
Students are encouraged to register for these events if they plan to attend. Both events will help students be better prepared for the next chapter of their educational journey.

Earn 1 business class credit for working the job you’re already doing! Learn skills to get promoted and plan your future career goals!
Requirement:
- Must have employment throughout the school year.
- Students must currently be in a CTE class

College Rep Visits: College admissions representatives are visiting Annandale High School. Below you will see a preview of the visits scheduled in September. To view the full list and to register visit Naviance and on "Colleges" at the top of the page and then click on "college visits." You will then see a list of all the colleges that are visiting, along with the dates and times. Click "register now" for the visits you would like to attend. Only Juniors and Seniors may register. College Application Help: There is free support twice a week. Wednesdays during Lunch in the Career Center (Room 103) and Thursdays 3-4pm (T-14) by AVID Club. ATOMS writing center will be available to help with college essays and supplemental application questions during PRIDE TIME and/or Wednesdays 3-4 pm in (Room 274).
Military Opportunities

Career Opportunities
Community Police Academy is Accepting Applications for their Fall 2024 Class
Ever wondered why the police do things a certain way? The FCPD Community Police Academy (CPA) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Fall session, starting on Thursday, September 12th.
The CPA meets every Thursday for 10 weeks from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m.
You’ll get behind-the-scenes tours of police facilities and hear from specialists on topics that only FCPD can offer. You can ask detectives questions, check out the latest crime-fighting technology, and even go on a police ride-along!
It’s completely FREE and will give you a new perspective on their work.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Live or work in Fairfax County
- Provide your own transportation
- Must clear a review of your criminal record and police contact history prior to acceptance.

Volunteer Opportunities
FCPS encourages students to make connections between the classroom and community through authentic, intentional, and impactful Service Learning. X2VOL is used to find, track, and verify service hours electronically through Naviance (log in under the Careers tab). Opportunities include:
GIVE Youth is a non-profit organization offering free tutoring for students in kindergarten through 7th grade. Weekly tutoring sessions start on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 10:30am-12:30pm weekly at the Centreville Regional Library. To volunteer, fill out this form. Email directors@giveyouth.org with questions.
Bull Run ES is having a Back to School Bash on Sept. 20 and is seeking volunteers from 4:15-8pm. Students must like working with children and will be setting up/running games, positively engaging with families and cleaning up after the event. Sign up for at least 1 hour of service here.
