All bus riders completed bus evacuation training with the support of staff and patrols.

Bus Evacuation Drills

This week bus riders practiced how to safely evacuate a school bus in the event of an emergency. Staff members and patrols were available to support the students. If your child is a bus rider, talk with them at home about how to stay safe on a bus.

A Note from the Principal's Desk

Dear Willow Springs families,

We have had a busy and exciting week as we kicked off Boosterthon and participated in daily challenges. We are looking forward to the fun run on Wednesday. Parents are invited to join the audience and cheer on our runners. The schedule can be found below. Let's hope the rain holds off so we can run safely on the field.

Speaking of challenges, all of the rain this week has made it hard for us to take the students outside for recess. Many of the students are likely feeling the effects of pent up energy and would benefit from some extra exercise and activity this weekend.

We hope all of you have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday for our Boosterthon Fun Run. #WillowPride

Drop off your pumpkin to the library week of October 14th-18th

Rules:

1) Decorate a pumpkin to represent a book character.

2) We prefer artificial pumpkins. Absolutely no pumpkins with carvings or holes. Real pumpkins that develop holes will be discarded.

3) Be creative in your decoration: paint your pumpkin and use glue.

4) Turn in your pumpkin and a card that lists the book character’s name, title, author of the book, and your name on the front and your teacher’s name on the back. Send pumpkins and cards to the library.

5) Only one pumpkin per student or staff member.

6) Your pumpkins will be returned the week of November 6th.

Note: This is not a contest. This is just for whoever wants to show their pumpkins off.

Students in grades 3-6 will soon take the SEL screener to measure Social Emotional Learning.

Students to be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. Our 3rd - 6th grade students will take the screener in October.

It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office

Farmers Market

Fall Farmers Market

Registration is now open for Kids Do Good Club.

Kids Do Good Club

Join the newest after school club at Willow Springs, Kids Do Good! For grades 2-6, Kids Do Good will enable students to participate in a community service activity each Tuesday, beginning October 1 after school in the cafeteria from 4-5 PM.

Students in grades K and 3 and all new students will have their hearing and vision screened at school in early October.

Upcoming Vision & Hearing Screening

Vision and Hearing screening will be held on October 9 & 10 for all Kindergarten, third grade and students who are new to FCPS.

The purpose of the screening is to identify students who need further evaluation due to difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones. If your child wears glasses, please make sure that the glasses are at school on screening day. Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further evaluation is needed. Prompt follow-up with your health care provider is recommended as vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning. If you have any questions, please contact the Health Room at 703-679-6010.
