Message from Mr. Greata
Hey Day, one of the great traditions here at Carter G. Woodson High School was a huge success this past Thursday, even with the wet conditions. Organizing this event is a huge accomplishment for our leadership students and club leaders that includes hosting the entire student body, running fundraising tables for over 90 clubs, and managing a faculty/student pickleball tournament. Inspired by the weather, our students made it rain, raising over $11,000 for their clubs, which will ensure an active school year, with many opportunities for students to get engaged.
Thank you to Dan Schaefer, Katie Cole-Kelly, and Stephanie Graham for all of your work in supporting Hey Day! If your student is interested in joining a club, they can go to our club page to find a list of clubs and sponsors.
Did you know that this year, out of the 213 students that applied for the National Honor Society, 200 were accepted. This has swelled our chapter membership to 400 members. A huge thank you to Andy Austin and Denise Holsinger for their tireless work to review the applications and to the teachers that wrote 426 teacher recommendations!
If your student is getting ready to apply for college, or has already started, I wanted to pass along some important and helpful information. In addition to Naviance being the database for scholarships, there is now an FCPS public webpage that includes scholarships available to all FCPS students. In addition, please register for the annual FCPS College Fair on Sunday, October 20th, at Eagle Bank Arena.
We had a tremendous evening on Wednesday, celebrating our senior golfers and their accomplishments, and learning a little bit about their favorite moments on the team. We know their talents both on and off the course will take them far in the future.
We can never thank our military families enough, and this past week we recognized Blue Star Welcome Week with a lunch to welcome our new military connected students and thank our current students. Thank you Josh Peters and Alaina Anderson for organizing this event.
Next week will be short, with no school on Thursday, October 3rd, for a student holiday and a teacher workday on Friday, October 4th. Happy Rosh Hashanah, or happy new year, to all those that celebrate.
As always, check out our sports page for our athletic schedule. Tonight we have girls volleyball and field hockey at home and football at Alexandra City High School. Go Cavaliers!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Carter G. Woodson High School Rededication Ceremony
We are thrilled to announce a momentous occasion in the history of our school community. On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 23, we will rededicate our high school under its new name, Carter G. Woodson High School, in honor of the esteemed historian, author, and educator, Dr. Carter G. Woodson.
This event will be open to our entire community. Please submit your RSVP no later than Friday, October 11th. The auditorium has a max room capacity, so please be sure to notate the total number of guests within your party and we will accommodate as best we can. There will be livestreaming available, which we will communicate to you if your seat request cannot be accommodated.
Over 90 Woodson clubs participated in Hey Day this past Thursday.
Attendance Reminder
With next week being a short week for students, please be mindful of notifying our attendance office of any impending student absences.
All Day absences can always be submitted through your ParentVue account.
If your student needs to be released early, please give the attendance office a heads up now by calling the attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leaving a voicemail. You can also have your student bring in a note to the office.

National Custodian Appreciation Day
FCPS employs more than 1,300 custodians, field custodians, and building supervisors to maintain more than 28 million square feet of infrastructure.
Woodson High School itself has over 20 custodians that help maintain our building on a daily basis. We wouldn't have a clean, safe place to learn, teach, and work if it wasn't for them.
Thank you to our colleagues on our custodial team!
