#OneTeamOneDream❤️
Give a round of applause to Amen and Elijah, our safety patrols of the month! Their dedication to keeping our school safe and organized is truly commendable. Thank you both for your hard work and commitment to our school community.
A Message from the Admin Team
Dear Little Run Family,
Thank you once again for your continued support and participation in our recent three-hour early release. Your flexibility and understanding made the day a success. We appreciate your ongoing commitment to our school community. As a reminder, your feedback is invaluable to us as we strive to improve our systems. Please take a moment to share your thoughts by completing this feedback form.
This week, we are thrilled to celebrate our military-connected families during Blue Star Welcome Week. This special week is dedicated to honoring the sacrifices made by our military families and providing them with a warm welcome and sense of belonging. We have planned activities and a school-wide spirit week to show our appreciation for your service.
As we approach the end of September, we are excited to prepare for our annual Back-to-School Night on October 1 from 6-8 p.m. This event is a great opportunity for families to learn more about their child's learning experiences and connect with teachers. We will be offering two classroom sessions from 6:10-6:55 p.m. and 7:10-7:55 p.m. Both sessions will cover the same information, allowing families to attend multiple sessions if they have multiple children or to choose a session that best fits their schedule.
We invite our military-connected families to join us at 5:30 p.m. for a special gathering to connect and socialize before the start of the classroom sessions.
In addition to the classroom sessions, we will also be offering three additional literacy sessions in the library, facilitated by our reading teacher. These sessions will provide valuable information and resources related to the Virginia Literacy Act and our new curriculum. The sessions will take place from 5:30-6 p.m., 6:10-6:55 p.m., and 7:10-7:55 p.m. We look forward to sharing resources, information, and answering any questions you may have.
We hope you had a wonderful weekend, and we can't wait to see our Roadrunners wearing blue on Monday as we celebrate our military-connected families at Little Run.
Thank you,
Christie Yarn, Principal
Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

🌟Blue Star Welcome Week - September 21-29
Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.
Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Little Run is proud to welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

The Little Run Way on the Bus
Are you looking for a topic to engage in at the dinner table this weekend? Or on the drive to your next destination? Ask your child about The Little Run Way on the BUS!
Consider asking your child(ren) one or more of the following questions:
- What does it look and sound like to be respectful while riding on the bus?
- How do you show responsibility when you are waiting at the bus stop? Or when you are in your seat?
- What does it mean to be ready while sitting with a friend on the bus?

Little Run Back to School Night - October 1
Please make sure to listen to a message from our FCPS School Board members:
Little Run STEAM Lab
Our amazing sixth grader, Hannah, has created a STEM binder for teachers to use in our STEAM Lab. She’s created lessons, projects, and assembled the required materials for student use. She earned her Girl Scouts Engineering Badge in the process, and we are so grateful to her dedication!
Our first graders used the engineering design process to create with planks this week, too!
Advanced Academics Continuum of Services Overview and Important Dates
A parent information meeting will be held at Little Run ES on Thursday, September 26 at 5 p.m. Jennifer Hitchcock will provide information about the continuum of AAP services, explain the screening processes, and answer questions about advanced academic services. All families are invited to join!
Screening for Full-Time AAP services occurs during specific screening cycles:
- Fall screening is available for students in grades 3-6 who are new to FCPS since January. The fall screening referral window is from the first day of school - October 15. Please submit the full-time referral no later than October 15.
- Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. The spring screening referral window is from the first day of school - December 15. No full-time referrals can be accepted after this date.
Referral forms for all advanced academic program services can be found here. Please contact Jennifer Hitchcock (JRHitchcock1@fcps.edu) with any questions.
Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning
FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.
The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.
After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.
Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.
Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Tiffany Sutton (school counselor), Karen Spradlin (social worker), and Rianna Taylor (psychologist) at 703-503-3500, to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence
FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.
Our third goal is for all students to achieve academic growth and excellence. We want our students to have the academic skills to be successful. For example, making sure they are readers by third grade and taking courses that challenge them throughout their education will help prepare them for lifelong success. See how Goal 3 is being put into practice.
