principal's message

Hello Mustangs,

It was another phenomenal week at South County Middle School. Our students have been participating in the iReady Assessment through their English classes. In October, we plan for students to take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth test in their Mathematics classes. These assessments have replaced the Reading Inventory (RI) and Math Inventory (MI), which will provide information for teachers to instruct our students effectively based on their needs. As always, please contact us to share any feedback, questions, or concerns. Enjoy the weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring. The SEL Screener elevates the voices of our students by making sure their perspectives are considered in decision-making. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students. Division and school level results, which do not include individual student information, may be used by staff to improve SEL and mental wellness practices and to inform strategic plans. Division and school level results may also be shared with the community to describe the needs of our student body and provide opportunities for partnership. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the SEL screener, please complete the attached opt out form and return it to the school by Monday, October 7th.

NOTIFICATION OF REGISTRATION OPPORTUNITY WORLD LANGUAGES CREDIT BY EXAM (WLCBE)

In response to the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of our community, students in grades 7-12 are offered the opportunity to take the World Languages Credit By Exam (WLCBE) each fall. The WLCBE assesses language proficiency in languages other than English and recognizes the strengths that our students bring as effective communicators in multiple languages. This assessment may be used to award world language credits towards graduation, determine course placement for language courses offered in FCPS, and fulfill the world languages requirements for the Virginia Seal of Biliteracy: Seal of Biliteracy | Virginia Department of Education

The exam is offered in the fall each school year. A student may participate in the exam two times per language, once per year, between grades 7 and 12. In other words, students have two chances per language to earn credits by taking the exam. Students who wish to take the exam should be able to proficiently understand and communicate in the testing language, and will be asked to listen, read, speak, write/type, and/or sign/interpret for ASL. For more information on how to prepare for the exam and scoring criteria you may visit our website: World Languages Credit By Exam | Fairfax County Public Schools (fcps.edu). Please complete and submit the form hyperlinked below to your student’s counselor by October 4th. Hard copies of the registration form are available in Student Services. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Please contact your student’s counselor with any questions.
