Message from Mr. Greata

We have several exciting events on the horizon that we’d like to share with you!

We are still seeking presenters for our Career Day on October 31st. This is a wonderful opportunity to guide our students in learning about various career paths and the steps needed to achieve their goals. If you're interested in participating and sharing your expertise, please don't hesitate to reach out.

We are excited to invite you to the Rededication Ceremony for Carter G. Woodson High School on October 23, 2024, at 5:00 PM in the school auditorium. Seating is limited, so please RSVP. Attendance will be first-come, first-served, and confirmation will be sent via email. For those unable to attend in person, the event will also be live-streamed.

We are thrilled to announce that we have six National Merit Semifinalists and 39 Commended Scholars! Congratulations to these exceptional students for their outstanding achievements. Please visit our Student Recognition page for their names as well as the names of our Cav Kudos award winners for this week.

I am also thrilled to announce the birth of Mrs. Collins newborn, Aidan!  As Mrs. Collins takes some leave to be with her family, Melinda Conner will be serving as acting assistant principal for the alpha range MAS-ROM, the ESOL department, and the English department. Mrs. Conner was previously serving as our academic dean, working with our collaborative learning teams and facilitating academic interventions across the school. This past summer, Mrs. Conner served as an assistant principal for a Credit Recovery and was the Social Studies Department Chair at Langley High School for 10 years. Thank you Mrs. Conner for stepping up to support our school!

Girls Volleyball is traveling to West Potomac tonight and Cross Country will be running at the Oatlands Saturday morning.  We hope to see you there!

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone.

Kevin Greata
Principal

Carter G. Woodson High School Rededication Ceremony

Save the Date! Carter G. Woodson High School Rededication Ceremony

We are thrilled to announce a momentous occasion in the history of our school community. On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 23, we will rededicate our high school under its new name, Carter G. Woodson High School, in honor of the esteemed historian, author, and educator, Dr. Carter G. Woodson.

This event will be open to our entire community.  Please submit your RSVP no later than Friday, October 11th. The auditorium has a max room capacity, so please be sure to notate the total number of guests within your party and we will accommodate as best we can. There will be livestreaming available, which we will communicate to you if your seat request cannot be accommodated.

Cars Needed for the Homecoming Parade

Woodson Leadership is looking for cars for our homecoming parade!

The Leadership classes are in need of vehicles for the parade!

Do you have a convertible, jeep or truck that you are willing to drive in our Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 18th? If so, please submit this form.

Vision and Hearing Screening

Vision and hearing screening will be held on October 10 & 11 for all 10 graders and students who are new to Fairfax County. If your child wears glasses, please be sure they have them at school on screening day.

Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further testing is needed. Vision and hearing difficulties can impact your students’ ability to learn. Prompt follow-up of a referral is recommended.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

If you would like to volunteer with the screening process on October 10 & 11 please contact Celeste Delahunty, School Health Aide at cdelahunty@fcps.edu  or by calling 703-503-4610.  No experience needed. Half day and full day slots are available.

Counselor Corner

Ever wonder what your child is doing online while studying? Use the Lightspeed Parent Report to learn the sites they are using while using their FCPS-issued device. Counselors will be asking students to complete a needs assessment which helps them identify areas in which they need support: time management, stress management, study skills, and other potential needs. We intend to run groups and offer support based on these identified needs.

Application season is upon us! Counselors met with seniors this week to share important senior year planning info, review the Senior Checklist and Next Steps documents, and refresh on the importance of organization. A transcript processed on time is one that was requested on time. We require 15 school days to upload transcripts, complete Secondary Reports, write recommendation letters, and submit all documents. Note our transcript request timeline deadlines. All students must submit a Consent form IS-111 and a Transcript Request Form on time  in order for us to submit transcripts.

Students! Get connected and participate in a club, sports team, or activity. Hey Day is coming up on 9/26 during Returns and is a fantastic time to check out which club is a great match. Bookmark our calendar and filter by Career Center, Activities, Athletics, and much more.
