Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We have had a busy week at Shrevewood, welcoming our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Dan Reichard, and having our first Early Release Monday. We will be planning a Parent Coffee for late October to provide families with the opportunity to meet Mr. Reichard.

Thank you all for helping to ensure our first three hour early release Monday went as smoothly as possible! We appreciate that the majority of you did not make last minute changes to your child/ren’s dismissal plans. Because of our partnership, we were able to keep every student safe. We will send additional information out regarding our next early release day, October 28.

Additionally, as we come to the end of Attendance Awareness Month, we want to share our current chronic absenteeism rate. We are currently at 14.2%, which is just above our rate at the end of last school year. Our goal is to stay below 10% all year as students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent. When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success.

As a reminder, students do not have school next Thursday or Friday because of the Rosh Hashanah holiday and Teacher Workday. Thank you for our continued partnership and work together to ensure the success of all Shrevewood students.

Sincerely,

Katie Vandawalker, Principal

Dan Reichard, Assistant Principal

Student Rights & Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30.

Fall Pictures are Ready!

School pictures are ready!

To order, log in to your account on mylifetouch.com,or create an account using your student's Student ID number.

Families can also log on to order a FREE Digital SmileSafe Card.  Learn more about the Smilesafe program here.

If your child was absent on Picture Day, we will have makeups on Friday, October 25.

Attendance

Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your child’s well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.

Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.

Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed three hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • December 9 (Changed from November 25)
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

Additional information can be found on the FCPS Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu

Student Birthday Policy

As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.

The Positivity Project

p2 shield

Next week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Forgiveness. Forgiveness means letting go of anger toward those who have done wrong and accepting that people make mistakes.

When we forgive, we can move past being hurt and make peace with what happened. Forgiveness heals and strengthens our relationships. It doesn’t erase what happened, but it helps us let go of the hurt and move forward.

Seeking forgiveness shows that a person values relationships and understands the impact of their actions. It shows humility, accountability, and a willingness to make amends. By seeking forgiveness, a person shows they care about resolving conflicts and restoring trust. It also shows emotional maturity and a commitment to personal growth.

To practice and encourage forgiveness at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.
