Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

As a friendly reminder, today, Monday, September 23rd, is our first three-hour early release day. Based on the survey responses we received, your child will be dismissed accordingly. We were thrilled to have 100% participation in the survey!

Please note that we have 42 students staying until 4:05 PM. The majority of students will be dismissed at 1:05 PM via bus, K&R, or walking. If you need to make changes today, please call ASAP so we have the most accurate information. 

Important Dates for Three-Hour Early Release:

  • September 23rd
  • October 28th
  • December 9th (Please note the change from November 25th)
  • February 24th
  • March 17th
  • April 28th
  • May 19th

We will continue to use the current spreadsheet from September 23rd. Please let us know if there are any changes to your child's dismissal plans for October 28th.

 

Thank you to those of you who were able to meet us last week for our first PTA meeting. We also loved seeing families join online with our Zoom option this year. We reviewed all of the wonderful items the PTA have been able to help the school purchase and we also heard from our multi-tiered systems of support coaches. Each PTA meeting, Franklin Sherman staff will close the last 20 minutes out with some useful parent information so we can continue to inform the community of the great work at FS and make sure you understand all of the lingo and how you can support at home.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Parent Information Night

There will be an Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) parent information night for families on Wednesday, September 25th at 5 PM-6 PM in the Franklin Sherman Cafeteria. Fairfax County provides a continuum of services to meet the needs of students at a variety of levels that are a rich part of our Franklin Sherman ES community.

Part 1: Advanced Academic Services at Franklin Sherman
Prior to joining, please watch this county prepared AAP Overview Video which outlines the various levels of service available to all students in FCPS. During the first part of our meeting, we will share the specific AAP program supports that are provided at Franklin Sherman.

Part 2: Full-Time AAP Services Screening Information
Parents of students in second through sixth grade, who are interested in having their child screened for the Full-Time AAP services will learn about the forms, documents, and deadlines for applications. This screening processes if conducted at the county level, and documentation requirements are set by the AAP Office. We will provide guidance on how to complete these forms, as well as a brief question and answer session for families.

Note: AAP Full Time Screening Parent Referrals are due on December 15, 2024. This is a county deadline, and late entries cannot be accepted.

5th and 6th Grade Choir Registration

Choir Registration Link

Forms due Monday, September 16.

I’m so excited to begin choir this school year. There’s much to learn and sing, so please complete this registration as soon as possible.

5th and 6th grade choir rehearses during the school day, Tuesdays from 9:30 - 10:10 am. 

The Musical

The musical is now a part of the choir curriculum, unlike previous years when the musical was exclusively for 6th graders. This also means 6th graders are not required to participate in the musical unless they join choir. Please note that participating in the musical will also require before-school rehearsals from November-March.

THIS OPTION IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO 6TH GRADE

If a 6th grader wants to participate in only the musical, choir will open enrollment again in November when we begin the audition process.

Volunteer Opportunity: After School Enrichment Program On-Site Lead Needed!

We’re excited to announce our upcoming After School Enrichment Programs, which will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from October 8th to December 11th. To ensure the success of these programs, we’re seeking a dedicated volunteer to serve as our On-Site Lead.

Key Details:

  • Dates: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, October 8th - December 11th
  • Time Commitment: 3:50 pm - 5:20 pm
  • Location: Franklin Sherman Elementary School

Role Overview:

The On-Site Lead will play a crucial role in helping our programs run smoothly. Responsibilities include assisting instructors with student gathering, taking attendance, periodically checking in on classes, and ensuring all students are signed out by their parents at the conclusion of the classes. As a thank you for your support, the On-Site Lead will receive a complimentary enrollment for their child in one of our enrichment classes.

Baroody Camps (Grades K-6)

From LEGO DC Landmarks and Karate to Minecraft Creative Adventures and Chess, Baroody has a wide variety of nine-week sessions starting on Tuesday, October 8 and Wednesday, October 9. These programs are available for grades K-6 and take place from 4:10 PM - 5:10 PM. Registration opens Monday, September 16 at 10:00 am, and closes Sunday, September 29. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

FSES is presenting another movie night at Franklin Sherman on Friday, October 25th— mark your calendars! More details to come later….. 

 

Monster Mash Dash

Registration is now open! Sign up your family to join us for a 5K or 1-Mile Fun Run, and get some exercise before everyone indulges in Halloween candy! Costumes are encouraged. Now in its eleventh year, this is Franklin Sherman's primary fundraising event of the year and one of its most widely-attended!

Early registration ends Friday, September 27!

Reminders

Students Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

 

Reporting All Day Absences

FCPS has created clearer guidance for reporting attendance.  Please use  using one of the methods below:

  • ParentVUE: Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, parents or legal guardians can submit up to two consecutive full-day absences using SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE on the FCPS website: fcps.edu/attendance.
  • Call the school's attendance line at 703-506-7979.
  • Email the front office at franklinshermanelem.attendance@fcps.edu. When emailing an absence or tardy, please include your child's first and last name and their teacher's name.

All Day Absences: The Attendance feature in ParentVUE is the FCPS secure web solution for reporting all day absences.

Partial Absence: To report late arrivals, early dismissals, or to update already submitted attendance, please contact the school. Our school's office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am-4:30 pm.

 

Free and Reduced Lunch Application

Families must complete the Free and Reduced Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Look for the application in August, view criteria, and up-to-date information on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.

To apply online:

  1.  Visit www.MySchoolApps.com
  2. In the State drop down menu, select Virginia
  3. Click on the Search button
  4. On the next screen, select Fairfax County Public Schools from the Choose your District dropdown
  5. Click on the Select District & Continue button
