Principal's Message

Hello, Scottie families!

Happy Friday! We had a great first PTO meeting of the year Wednesday evening. Thank you to those who were able to attend, as it was great to connect with new families, returning families, and several Bonnie Brae staff!

A reminder that this upcoming Monday, September 23, is our first 3-hour early release of the year.  Thank you, parents and guardians, for sharing with your child’s teacher when (and how) they will be going home on Monday.  Dismissal is at 12:15 PM, and for those families that need childcare supervision, dismissal will take place at 3:15 PM.

This morning we enjoyed coffee and breakfast treats during our first parent coffee of the year, and we had the opportunity to hear from our ESOL teachers about ways they support not only multilingual learners, but all students.  We are looking forward to next week where we will be celebrating Blue Star Schools Welcome Week, in which we welcome our military families. We will celebrate our military (and all) parents at a parent coffee on Friday, September 27. See below for details.  Also, next Friday we have our first SCA Spirit Day of the year - wear Bonnie Brae Gear and/or Blue & White!

We end this week with our PTO outdoor movie night tonight.  A reminder that movie night is a family event, and students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times. We look forward to seeing our Scottie families this evening in the front of the school!

Have a great weekend!

Natalie Vershaw, Assistant Principal

Melissa Johnson, Assistant Principal

Updates

Blue Star Welcome Week

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity to empower military families to thrive as they serve. There are approximately 14,500 military-connected students enrolled in FCPS. Each year, one-third of our military families transition into or out of our district. Blue Star Welcome Week gives schools an opportunity to welcome and connect with their military families. The goal is to create a sense of belonging and ensure that our military families feel celebrated and welcomed into their school communities.

We look forward to a great week, and a great finish to next week with our first Bonnie Brae spirit day of the year, and our Blue Star Welcome Week parent coffee!

High Impact Tutors

Bonnie Brae ES is excited to welcome back FCPS High Impact Tutors, Sarah Czarnecki (literacy) and Lovepreet Kaur (math). Tutors support students in grades three through six, in the classroom and in small groups.  Tutors collaborate with teachers and other school-based staff to provide academic support for students aligned to standards-based classroom instruction.  Tutor groupings are flexible and based on needs presented by assessments given throughout the school year. We are thrilled to have Ms. Czarnecki and Ms. Kaur supporting our upper grade students!

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Lisa Jeffries, lmjeffries@fcps.edu, or Cori Lonnett, calonnett@fcps.edu, our  school counselors, to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
