Hype Squad student section at the first home football game!
Good afternoon, Edison Eagles!
I am thrilled to share some exciting news! We are proud to announce that we have two National Merit Semifinalists (Nicolas Argueta-Vasquez and Grayson Haupt) and six Commended Scholars (Isabella Bean, Victoria Bujoreanu, Daniel Murphy, Jordan Najia and Aiden Signh) this year. Being named a National Merit Semifinalist is an incredible achievement, as these students scored in the country's top 1% of all PSAT test-takers. They will now move on to compete for finalist status and scholarships. Our Commended Scholars also performed exceptionally well on the PSAT, placing in the top 3-4% of test-takers nationwide. These accomplishments reflect our students' hard work and dedication, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Last Friday, we had an amazing first home football game! It was a beautiful night capped off with a stunning sunset. Our student section brought incredible energy, cheering for our team all night long. While we didn’t come away with the win, our players showed tremendous heart, and we are so proud of their efforts.
I also want to invite our families to some important upcoming events. Our Padres Latinos group will meet this Saturday, September 21, at 10 AM in the cafeteria. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Edison community and learn more about how you can get involved.
Next week is Blue Star Welcome Week, a special time when we honor and welcome our military families to Edison. This week-long event is designed to celebrate and support families with military ties, helping them feel part of our school community. We’ll be hosting our military-connected students for a pizza lunch during all lunches on Tuesday September 24th, to show our appreciation for the unique contributions and experiences these families bring to our school.
On September 24, we have our Senior Parent Meeting at 5:45 PM in the auditorium. Afterward, I encourage parents to attend our first PTSA meeting of the year in the lecture hall at 7 PM.
Additionally, I hope to see many of you at my Parent Coffee on Wednesday, September 25, at 9 AM. This will be a great time to discuss the start of the school year and the support systems we have in place for our students. RSVP here for coffee with Mrs. Burke!
Finally, our Senior Panoramic Picture will take place during advisory on Friday, September 27. We look forward to capturing this special moment for our seniors and for the yearbook!
Thank you for your continued support of Edison High School. I hope everyone has a restful weekend, and I look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events.
Go Eagles!

National Merit Semi-Finalists Grayson Haupt and Nicolas Argueta-Vasquez!
All 10th and 11th grade students should be in attendance on October 9 to take the PSAT. Only seniors who already signed up for the SAT should report to school that day. All other seniors will have an unscheduled day and do not report to school. Registration for the SAT has closed, and we cannot accept any late registrations at this point.
All 9th graders, except those who participate in our adapted curriculum program, will have an unscheduled day and should stay at home on October 9.

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.
Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning
FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.
The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.
After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.
Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Kayla Callister, our school psychologist at kcallister@fcps.edu, to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Their therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.
Students may be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect families with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.
