Franklin Families-

Today, we had our first spirit day of the year with "Team Jersey Day."  Students and staff members were encouraged to wear a jersey or shirt to represent their favorite team.  While it is NFL season and I saw a lot of NFL jerseys, I've also seen some baseball, hockey, basketball jerseys.  Some students were even wearing the jerseys of the teams that they play on!  It was great to see such great participation, even with the short notice.  I will always wear my Giants gear even though we haven't had much to cheer about in the last decade or so.

Speaking of sports, our middle school sports season is about to be in full swing!  Our Cross Country team has their first meet tomorrow at Hughes Middle School.  I'll give our runners the same advice that my coach used to give me: "Go out hard, pick it up, and kick it in."  Definitely easier said than done!  All students and community members are welcome to attend this meet.

Our Boys and Girls Basketball teams are also getting ready to start their season next Thursday at Stone MS.  These events are reserved for the athletes and their families.  We'll save the big crowd for our game against Rocky Run in the spring!  Good luck to all of our athletes in the coming week, we know you'll represent Franklin well.

I would like to remind our military connected families that they are invited for a Family Coffee to recognize Blue Star Welcome Week! The event will be held on Monday, September 23 from 9:00 - 10:30 am.  A light breakfast along with coffee and other drinks will be provided.  We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Tom DeRusso

Principal

Blue Star Welcome Week

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.  You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your family's health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year.  If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. Be wise and immunize!

Attendance Reporting

When your student is not in school for a partial or full day, it is important that we hear from you! Please report an absence in one of the following ways:

  1. Report the full-day absence in ParentVUE. Learn more about reporting absences in ParentVUE.
  2. Call our attendance line and leave a detailed voicemail - 703-904-5151
  3. Send an email to FranklinMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu

When reporting an absence, please be specific about why your student will not attend school so that we code the absence correctly.  For more information about what is considered an excused absence and what to do when you need to pick-up your child early, please visit our Attendance Reporting Page.

Progress Reports in ParentVUE/StudentVUE

At the start of this year, you should have already verified that your contact information is correct in ParentVUE.  It is extremely important that your email address and phone numbers are correct.

Starting in middle school, parents and guardians have access to weekly progress reports beginning September 9, 2024.  To activate Weekly Progress Reports via email, log-in to your SIS ParentVUE account, verify that you have a primary email address, and select your preferences in the “My Account” tab. For more information please visit this information page
