In addition, join us in celebrating our Second Blue Star Welcome Week! This week is dedicated to honoring and welcoming our military-connected families. What is Blue Star Welcome Week?
Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.
Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

Continuum of Services
September 30th from 5:30-6:30PM
We are excited to host an information night on September 30th in the cafeteria to discuss the different levels of service available to all Fairview students. There will be information about what each of the levels of service are and what their service delivery looks like. We will also talk about how to advocate for your child to be reviewed for these services.
Full Time (Level IV) Screening
October 8th from 5:30-6:30 PM
This informational meeting will be held in the POD. The focus for this informational session is to explain the process for Full Time (Level IV) Services that take place in 3rd-6th Grades. This process will take place this school year for next year’s placements. We will discuss everything from the referral to the County Level Screening process. If you would like more information on this process, please plan to attend.
As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:
•Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
•Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
•Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.
We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. We encourage families to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a comprehensive Family Life Education (FLE) program.
FLE instruction begins in kindergarten and continues through grade 12. FLE includes topics in human growth and development and social and emotional health. FLE instruction helps students gain knowledge and skills needed to make healthy, responsible, and life-enhancing decisions related to relationships and their physical, emotional, and social health. Parents and guardians are partners in their child’s learning.
FLE instruction supports the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community. Parents and guardians can review FLE materials. Parents/guardians can access FLE lessons in Schoology using their SIS username and password. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media titles online. Lessons and media are available for review at your child’s school. Lessons only are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).
A hard copy letter was sent home in Wednesday folders. If you wish to opt your child out please plan to fill out the letter. It will only need to be returned if you are choosing to opt your child out of any or all lessons.
FLE program descriptions and opt-out forms are available on the FCPS website.
For information about when FLE instruction will take place, please contact your child’s teacher or school.
For questions about the FLE program, please contact Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or email
fle@fcps.edu.

Parent Toolkit- Parent Action Required
The following are some yearly action items for all parents to complete. Items with an asterisk (*) are time sensitive and require parent action.
JOIN THE PTA
We are take pride in the programs we coordinate and develop that impact our community, teachers and the students, from Staff Appreciation to Family Fun Events.
But we can’t do it without the support and volunteering of our parents and teachers.
Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning
FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.
The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.
After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.
Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.
Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Karen Fructuoso or Jill Corderman, our school counselors, to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence
FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.
Our third goal is for all students to achieve academic growth and excellence. We want our students to have the academic skills to be successful. For example, making sure they are readers by third grade and taking courses that challenge them throughout their education will help prepare them for lifelong success. See how Goal 3 is being put into practice.
