Dear Stenwood Families,
It has been a busy week in the Hive!
We loved seeing so many of you last Friday night at the Ice Cream Social. Thank you to our amazing PTA who hosted such a wonderful community building event. On Monday afternoon, we hosted our annual New Student Meeting. During this meeting we invite our new to Stenwood 1st - 6th graders to hear from some SCA members about the fun activities that we have here at Stenwood. We also answer questions they might have and hear how we could make Stenwood an even better place to be every day. On Tuesday evening, we had our first in person PTA meeting and it was a great turn out! Today, Mrs. Hartman, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher offered a presentation on the overview of Advanced Academics in FCPS. If you were not able to attend, see below for a recording and slidedeck of the presentation.
Next week, we will host our first Power of Words Community Night. We hope that many of you will join us to hear more about the assemblies we did last year and have planned for this year for 3-6 grade students. We will also be engaging in dialogue around your takeaways, questions, and what more you may need to support these conversations at home.
Finally, we have our first 3-hour Early Release this coming Monday. Students will have a modified instructional schedule. All students will have a full lunch block and our normal lunch menu will be available though it will be on an earlier schedule.

Power of Words Community Night
On Thursday, September 26th from 6:00-7:30 PM, Stenwood will host our first ever Power of Words Community Night in the cafeteria. Stenwood Administration and members of Stenwood’s Region leadership will present the content from our Power of Words assemblies and discussions that began last year in 3rd through 6th grade. These lessons will continue this year in those same grades. We invite all of our community to hear about this work. There will also be time for those in attendance to share about their experience and perspectives.
Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Information Sessions
Thanks to all who were able to join us this morning, Mrs. Hartman, our AART, led the first of two information sessions about the Advanced Academic Program (AAP). It focused on the Continuum of Service in FCPS. If you were unable to attend, here is the link to a recorded slide deck: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/rec/share/9weKvqEOCEXBUJrVTZhsXG1vagXQEZ0839JpQjt4B9wz9l9W8LaXT-BMEL8xqsRT.tvDFjq0DnsjmPk0g
Passcode: k?Y572EKAY
There will be a second session on the Level IV (Full-Time) services and screening process on Friday, October 11th at 8:45AM. Full-time AAP Services begin in 3rd grade, with the screening process happening in 2nd grade. All families are welcome to attend, however the information is geared more towards families with students in 2nd grade and up.
Stenwood Community Book Club
Please join us to discuss parenting challenges and strategies in a supportive community. We are excited to be discussing The Anxious Generation by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. This book lays out the decline in mental health and social development with the rise of social media and smartphones in the 2010s, as well as the steps we can take as a community. If you haven’t already joined the email list, please fill out this form to express your interest and feedback and we will provide you with more details directly. We are planning to meet on October 11th from 12:20 - 1:05 pm on Zoom. And again on November 7th at 3:30 pm, in person at Stenwood. The book club is facilitated by Catherine Wideman, Kindergarten Teacher and Tammy Berick, School Counselor. It is open to all parents, guardians and family members who want to join.
Dunn Loring Administrative Center Community Meeting
As you might know, the Dunn Loring Administrative Center is being repurposed into a new elementary school. This new school will serve the growing needs of our community. While the project is scheduled to be completed in 2027, we understand that you may have questions about the impact on our work environment in the coming years.
To address your concerns and keep you informed, a virtual community meeting will be held on Monday, September 23rd from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During this meeting, a project update will be presented to the community.
It is specifically focused on community interests, attendance can provide valuable insight into the project's timeline and potential impacts.
Register to attend here.
