September is Attendance Awareness Month

Importance of Strong Attendance Habits

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Visit our website for more attendance resources. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

October 9th PSAT/SAT Testing Day

Early Release

All high schools will administer the PSAT and SAT on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Standard PSAT/NMSQT and SAT school day testing requires approximately three hours to administer. A two-hour early release is scheduled for all high school and secondary school students on PSAT/SAT Day to provide staff development or to allow teacher-directed time.

High school academy courses will not be held on October 9, 2024, and all high school shuttles are canceled for the day. High school academy staff will support based school activities.

Parental Consent Required for Selected Digital Resources

At Robinson Secondary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some digital resources — those that collect any student data or from vendors who have not established a formal contract with FCPS — cannot be used by students until we obtain consent from their guardian.

You can find the list of the resources that require parent/caregiver consent here on the Digital Resources-Parent Consent webpage. FCPS’ Digital Resources page provides additional information.

The Digital Resources-Parent Consent page has a link to the Digital Consent System, where the parent/caregiver will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. You will need to access the form using your SIS ParentVUE username and password.

The Digital Resources page also highlights how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources and why we must obtain your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the Parental Consent for Digital Resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.

Please reach out to Nathan Poumade (njpoumade@fcps.edu) or Elizabeth Joyce (eajoyce@fcps.edu), if you have questions or concerns.

2024-25 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

Counselor Corner

Important updates and resources from the student services department.

Middle School NKOTB (New Kids on the Block) Gathering.  Middle School Student Services and Middle School RAMbassadors hosted a brief reception with treats for all of middle school students new to the Robinson pyramid and FCPS.  While they have that in common at this point, as time passes we want them to find their group and comfort zone here. The RAMbassaors are eighth grade students who volunteer to come alongside new Robinson students; many of them were new students at Robinson last year.  We have heard very few adjustment concerns but this was an opportunity to introduce their counselors and Administrator and our roles in supporting their success. Parents are encouraged to communicate any concerns of we may not be aware.

Checking the GradebookWe are just short of the half-way point in the First Quarter which ends on October 31.  In most classes, there have been assignments and assessments (tests and quizzes) to enable grades to be earned and entered in gradebooks.  A weekly parent check of SIS Parent Vue with your student and discussion of what you see is a great habit to begin, in our opinion.  While teachers will communicate concerns, parents can usually pick up trends earlier that are different from what you expect or have seen in the past.  While we work together, you know your student best and are usually in the best position to make a difference for them. We are here to partner with you.

The Student Services staff is here to help you in any way we can.  Please note that students cannot leave class or lunch to see their counselor without an appointment and a pass.  If they need assistance, we encourage them to email our Student Services staff to request an appointment.  If there is an emergency, their teacher will call the subschool office for assistance.
