Dear Shrevewood Families,
It is bittersweet that I share that our wonderful Office Assistant, Vicky Vien, has accepted a well deserved promotion to SIA at Daniels Run Elementary School. Vicky's last day at Shrevewood is Tuesday, September 24. We are grateful for all that Vicky has done for the Shrevewood community and she will be missed!
We have our first 3 hour early release this Monday, September 23rd. You should have received an email this past Tuesday confirming the time your child is dismissing on Monday. Students will dismiss via their normal dismissal type (bus, Kiss and Ride, etc.) unless parents have communicated differently. Please email swesoffice@fcps.edu if your child needs to dismiss in a different way.
Sincerely,
Katie Vandawalker, Principal

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R.
Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30.
School pictures are ready!
To order, log in to your account on mylifetouch.com or create an account using your student's student ID number.
All families can also log on and order a FREE Digital SmileSafe card.
More about the Smilesafe program here.
If your child was absent on Picture Day, we will have makeups on Friday, October 25th.
Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your student’s well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.
Beginning in the 24-25 school year, parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.
PTA Armchair Fundraiser
The 2024 Armchair Fundraiser is here! View the official Armchair webpage to learn more and donate! Gifts ensure that Shrevewood's PTA is positioned to support the school during this academic year. Every donation enters your student(s) into a raffle for weekly prizes and the classes with most participants will receive pizza parties! And if we reach our goal, the students will get to choose Mrs. Vandawalker's costume for Book Character Day on 10/31!

Students, families, and staff throughout FCPS and in our school community will use Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as our learning management system. Here is what you need to know now:
You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to login to Schoology.
The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.
The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:
- September 23
- October 28
- December 9 (Changed from November 25)
- February 24
- March 17
- April 28
- May 19
Additional information can be found on the FCPS Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu.
As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.
Next week, our school will focus on the character strength of Perspective. This means understanding and appreciating different points of view. Perspective, often seen as wisdom, goes beyond intelligence. People with this strength are valued for their advice because they see the big picture and understand complex issues.
Those with perspective can get to the heart of difficult matters and bring clarity. They are honest, ethical, and good at seeing what truly matters. This helps them stay calm and learn from mistakes. By reflecting on their own feelings and thoughts, they can empathize with others and offer strong listening and questioning skills. They help their groups navigate challenges and find opportunities for success.
To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.
