Dear Union Mill Families,

We are super excited to kick off UMES PTA Boosterthon and can’t wait for all the fun it will bring to our school! There are so many exciting things happening around Union Mill, and this event is just the start. Stay tuned for more updates and join us in the fun

As we approach our first 3-hour early release on Monday, September 23rd, we kindly ask that all students follow their regular routes home. To ensure student safety and smooth dismissal, please complete this form to confirm your plans for each student if you have not already done so.

Communication and Collaboration at Work 

This week students in Mrs. Lins' class continued fostering a strong sense of community and building meaningful relationships as they engage in their language arts work stations. They continue to develop their Portrait of a Graduate skills, collaborating and communicating effectively to solve tasks together while supporting one another’s growth!

CPR in PE

PE is excited to have 4th-6th grade students learning about and practicing the life-saving act of hands-on CPR. Last week students learned about the circulatory system and the differences between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. This week students will be learning how to check the scene and perform RAB-C: Check for Responsiveness, Activate EMT (911) and AED, Check for Breathing, and Compressions). Thank you for Centreville High School and the Health and PE office for letting us use your mannequins.

Full Time Services Screening Process

Join Mrs. Paris-Hutchens our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher on Thursday, October 10th  at 5:45 pm for a presentation of information on the FCPS Full Time Screening process for referrals due December 15th. This session will include information on the school’s role in Full Time Screening, optional parent contributions to the screening portfolio, and the holistic screening process itself.


FLE Parent Preview 

You are invited to attend an evening session to preview the Family Life Education (FLE) media and lessons, and to engage in conversation with school staff about the program. The meeting will take place on Thursday, October 10 at 5:15 pm in Room 108. During this time, all program materials and media for every grade level will be available for your review.

Parents/guardians who do not wish for their child to participate in FLE instruction can opt them out of any or all lessons. For students in general education classes, opt-out forms are available through the Parent Digital Consent (PDC). For students in special education or those using the modified FLE lessons for the 2024-2025 school year, a paper opt-out form is required. These forms can be accessed at: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/curriculum/subject-area/family-life-education-fle/fle-opt-out-request-forms.

If you decide to opt your child out but later wish for them to participate, please notify the school principal or assistant principal in writing before instruction begins in December.


Centreville High School Homecoming Parade 

Centreville High School will be hosting its annual Homecoming Parade through the Little Rocky Run neighborhood on Friday, September 27th. The parade runs from 5:00 - 5:30 pm along the following routePlease note: the parade route is significantly different than prior years' routes.

Early Release Mondays

The Centreville Pyramid, which includes Union Mill Elementary, will have the following three-hour early release days. On these days, students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.

  • October 28
  • December 9 
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help us plan for childcare needs during our early release Mondays, please fill out this form for each of your children enrolled at Union Mill Elementary. This form will cover the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024, and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, please submit a separate form for each one. We’ll follow up with you to confirm the after-school supervision plan for your child. Thank you for your help in making these days smooth and enjoyable for everyone!

*Students requiring adult supervision due to hardship will be overseen by instructional assistants, school monitors, school staff, central office personnel, and/or volunteers. Your child will not be with their teacher due to required professional development. Time will be allocated for students to complete STMath, Lexia, MyOn, independent reading, and other similar supervised tasks.

Union Mill Fun Run Fundraiser is Here!

Union Mill Families,

We are excited to announce the kickoff of our Union Mill Fun Run fundraiser! Our goal is to raise $50,000 to enhance our school’s resources and provide our students with the best possible educational experience.

This year we are raising funds for classroom technology needs, Math & Science Night, seating and carpet replacement. Additionally, if we hit our $50,000 goal, we will have a school-wide PJ Day!
