Fifth graders in Ms. Robinson's class learned about force and motion.
Early Release on Monday September 23
Oakton Elementary will have it's first of seven early release days on September 23. School will dismiss at 1:00PM. Parents were asked to inform the school if, due to childcare hardship, their child needs to remain at school until the regular dismissal time of 4:00PM.
Students requiring adult supervision due to hardship will be overseen by school staff. Your child will not be with their teacher due to required professional development. Time will be allocated for students to complete homework, STMath, Lexia, MyON, independent reading, and other similar supervised tasks.
You will receive an email from the school soon, verifying your selection for dismissal time. Please be sure to inform us if it is incorrect as soon as possible.
Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)
The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned by Monday, September 30.
ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (AAP) PARENT INFORMATION SESSION
A parent information session will be held on Monday, September 30, 2024 @ 5PM in the OES Library. An overview of AAP services and the identification & screening for full-time services will be shared.
For more information please visit: FCPS AAP. Please note for families (grades 3-6) new to FCPS boundaries as of January 1, 2024, the Fall Screening parent referral for full-time AAP services is due on October 15, 2024. For current FCPS families in grades 2-6, the Spring Screening parent referral for full-time AAP services is due on December 15, 2024.
Ability Testing FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration of the holistic screening process for advanced academic services. Test scores are not weighted or prioritized in the holistic screening process. • All students in Grade 1 take the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT). • All students in Grade 2 take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). • NNAT and/or CogAT may be administered to students in Grades 3-6 who do not have an ability test score during the regularly scheduled testing windows. Parents or guardians may request a one-time retest of either the CogAT or the NNAT in grades 3-6. Requests must be made during the fall testing windows. Please contact the school testing coordinator, Abby Holzinger, acholzinger@fcps.edu, no later than October 2 to request a one-time retest of the CogAT or October 15 for the NNAT.
Any questions? Please contact the Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs), Christine Neubauer, cmplagataneu@fcps.edu or Ellen Donnelly, ejdonnelly@fcps.edu. Please email AARTs the Parent full-time AAP referral form to apply for full-time services.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School
Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.
Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.
Read about how families can help form good attendance habits. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
