A Message from the Admin Team

Little Run Admin Team at front of school

Dear Little Run Family,

We hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend! Our students had a successful four-day week, filled with learning and growth.

As a reminder, we will have a three-hour early release on Monday, September 16. In the coming days, you will receive a confirmation email to ensure we are certain how all students plan to get home on this day.

We want to express our sincere gratitude to our families for their continued partnership and support. We hope to see you at our first PTA meeting of the school year on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m. in the Little Run Library. This is a great opportunity to connect with other families and learn more about our school community.

Thank you,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

Important Safety Message About Arrival

Arrival Map of Little Run

Side Parking Lot (Entrance C): Please note that this lot will now be roped off beginning at 8:10 a.m., as we must ensure the safety of our walkers. A reminder that this lot has our designated accessible parking spots. Cars parked in any of the designated accessible parking spots (marked with a blue sign/paint) must have the appropriate placard. The spots may not be used as a waiting area.

SACC Arrival (Entrance C): Families arriving after 8 a.m. will need to park and walk their children to the SACC room, as the SACC parking area will be roped off. After 8:15 a.m., the gate will be locked, and you must use the main entrance to escort your child to SACC. If you arrive after 8:30 a.m., please check in at the Little Run office, and they front office staff will escort your child to SACC.

Kiss & Ride (Entrance A): We have a supervised Kiss & Ride lot where parents may drive their children to school and drop them off.  Parents who use Kiss & Ride must follow all rules including the following:

  • Follow the directions of the staff on duty
  • Please do not leave your car. Please work with your children to learn to fasten seatbelts independently, when possible.
  • Please do not pass other cars in the Kiss & Ride lane. All vehicles wait in line and move as one line.
  • If you arrive early to Kiss & Ride (prior to 8:15 a.m.) and there is no staff member present, please do not drop off your child. S/he would not be supervised.
  • When driving, please do not text or use your cell phone. This is dangerous to the many students nearby.

September 11 National Day of Service

September 11 Patriot Day

With the upcoming 23rd anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Middle and high school students can learn more about service learning by logging into their Naviance account to access x2VOL.

The Little Run Way in the Hallway

The Little Run Way in the Hallway

Are you looking for a topic to engage in at the dinner table this weekend? Or on the drive to your next destination? Ask your child about The Little Run Way in the HALLWAY!

Consider asking your child(ren) one or more of the following questions:

  • What does it look and sound like to be respectful while walking in the hallway?
  • How do you show responsibility when you are with your class in the hallway? Or when you are walking with a buddy?
  • What does it mean to be ready while standing in the hallway?

Little Run Preschool Community Peers

Preschool teacher on carpet with student

Little Run Elementary is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program again this year. The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for our students to participate in integration activities with typically developing peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are age 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs.

Please reach out to us directly by completing this form if you are interested in your preschool-age child participating in this program. Interested families will be able to attend an information session and playdate, and we hope to make selections some time in October. You can also reach out for further explanation of our program. We welcome your thoughts or suggestions, as we are all partners in this effort.

Little Run will host an Open House for any interested families on Wednesday, September 18 from 1:15-2 p.m.

Our roadrunners have been learning about the Engineering Design Process in the STEAM Lab this week! They have learned to begin with a question, to imagine, plan, create, and improve their designs, all while using their communication and collaboration skills.

2024 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R.

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30.

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

The 2023-30 strategic plan sets five main goals to create positive change in FCPS. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Each goal has an equity commitment — the promise we make to every student to support them in attaining these goals. Each goal also has several measures that allow us to track our progress.

The first goal in the strategic plan focuses on each and every student having a strong start in FCPS. Whether they're joining us in preschool or in high school, we want our students to be set up for success.

See how Goal 1 is being put into practice.

🩹 Immunization Requirements

Please check with your health care provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to your school’s front office.

Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided to your school’s front office, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:

  • A health care provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations.
  • A health care provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  • A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with their religious tenets or practices.

Find more information on immunizations.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
