September 11th National Day of Service

Sept. 11
  • With the upcoming 23rd anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Middle and high school students can learn more about service learning by logging into their Naviance account to access x2VOL.

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow! The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance web page for tips and strategies

October 9th PSAT/SAT Testing Day

Early Release

All high schools will administer the PSAT and SAT on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Standard PSAT/NMSQT and SAT school day testing requires approximately three hours to administer. A two-hour early release is scheduled for all high school and secondary school students on PSAT/SAT Day to provide staff development or to allow teacher-directed time.

High school academy courses will not be held on October 9, 2024, and all high school shuttles are canceled for the day. High school academy staff will support based school activities.

2024-25 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

Parental Consent Required for Selected Digital Resources

At Robinson Secondary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some digital resources — those that collect any student data or from vendors who have not established a formal contract with FCPS — cannot be used by students until we obtain consent from their guardian.

You can find the list of the resources that require parent/caregiver consent here on the Digital Resources-Parent Consent webpage. FCPS’ Digital Resources page provides additional information.

The Digital Resources-Parent Consent page has a link to the Digital Consent System, where the parent/caregiver will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. You will need to access the form using your SIS ParentVUE username and password.

The Digital Resources page also highlights how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources and why we must obtain your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the Parental Consent for Digital Resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.

Please reach out to Nathan Poumade (njpoumade@fcps.edu) or Elizabeth Joyce (eajoyce@fcps.edu), if you have questions or concerns.

Helping your Student in Responding to a School Tragedy.  In light of the tragedy of the latest school shooting in Georgia, here is another article which may be of interest, from Newport Academy in helping students work through their feelings and possible fears.

School Reluctance.  The following article is also from Newport Healthcare and while it addresses initial return to school, we believe there is some good information if your student shows indications of not wanting to come to school.

1. Back in School. Being around young people keeps one young although we admit easier when one is not parenting them! We have to keep in mind we are raising adults, not children, since we are preparing them for life as adults.

2. School Start. The new seventh graders (all of them) seem to be very comfortable and adapting well to the middle school experience.  They are adhering to the cell phone policy which is new (and a good one) for all of us and the noise level in the cafeteria is up—students are talking with each other instead of heads down looking at a screen!  Yay!  We did find a student in the boys’ room beating his Yondr case against the trash can to open it but assured him he would survive without the phone and his parents probably did not want to pay $18 to replace it. 😊  Middle school boys are “hands-on” so we watch for that. One student headed for the clinic, when asked why, said, “My knee, a friend jumped on my back and I couldn’t hold him.” We know the friend did not intend any damage but prevention is better than cure.  Early adolescent (middle school) brains: “Ready, fire, aim!”  We are thankful students have you and us (older people) around them.  Keep listening to any concerns they have and encourage them to see an adult here (more on that below).  A substitute teacher shared that student behavior here is better than he has seen in any of his assignments!

3. Communications. Now that your students have come to middle school, they are still in transition mode and some (but few) are testing the limits (just doing their job, our job is to enforce them!). They are now out of elementary school. Our goal, and we believe yours, is to prepare them for a life and world of responsibility without us (although hopefully we will be around for a long while!). So:

(1) Encourage them to use Schoology and check their email regularly (twice a week should work)

(2) If we are communicating on an issue for your student or for their action, we will usually email them directly and copy you for information.  If parents have an “adult-only” item, that does not apply, of course, and we can discuss a strategy if you want us to advise them of something you and your counselor discuss. If not, it is confidential with us adults.

4. 2x5 Study Plan. When we ask students struggling academically how they studied in elementary (or middle) school, they usually respond, “I study the night before the test.” That may work for a few students but very few in high school and we want them prepared.  We encourage the 2x5 Study Plan:

  • “2x5” represents 2 hours max, 5 nights a week (some students use Sunday-Thursday nights, no one wants to study on Friday night!)
  • Look at your weekday time from after school until a reasonable bedtime
  • Factor in a short “down time” immediately after getting home from school
  • Identify two one-hour blocks (maximum) for a study time, consecutive or separate hours
  • Same place, same time (if at all possible), minimal distractions
  • Study the first academic subject with a class that day for 25 minutes
    • Do homework
    • If no homework, go over (study) notes or any worksheets done
    • Work on a longer term project coming up if known
  • After first subject, take a 10 minute (not 1 hour 10 minutes!) break
  • Study the second subject from that day for 25 minutes (same as “first academic subject” above)
  • Either continue on or use the second hour later if required
  • Usually less than two hours is required
  • This plan will help reinforce information in a student’s mind and avoid cramming the night before a test; a review should work without staying up late

Parents will need to help students establish this habit; new habits take about three weeks to establish.

5. Finally.  Please be in touch with your counselor with any questions, comments or concerns.  We look forward to meeting you at Middle School Back to School Night on Thursday, September 19.  More will be put out on that.  Everyone take care of yourself and each other.

The Student Services staff is here to help you in any way we can.  Please note that students cannot leave class or lunch to see their counselor without an appointment and a pass.  If they need assistance, we encourage them to email our Student Services staff to request an appointment.  If there is an emergency, their teacher will call the subschool office for assistance.
