Dear Franklin Sherman Families,
Last Friday, we had a fun celebration for September birthdays. It was wonderful to see our students enjoying their special day by getting to take home their own books thanks to our amazing PTA's book vending machine.
I've been making an effort to visit classrooms during morning meeting to participate in the important social-emotional grounding activities. It's a great way to connect with our students and reinforce the importance of a positive learning environment that focuses on building relationships.
Our first PTA meeting of the year is coming up on September 18th from 8-9 AM. Childcare will be provided in the library, so please plan to join us! Your support is essential to the success of our school community. If you are unable to join in person, you do have the opportunity to join us via Zoom.
As we've started this school year, the PTA has generously funded new rugs, projectors, and fantastic spirit wear for our staff. The shirts you saw at open house and back-to-school night were a direct result of their hard work and dedication.
Thank you for your continued support.

Franklin Sherman’s Get2Green group (formally known as The Green Panda) is resuming its activities this school year. It is an Eco Club where students learn about the environment and how to be better stewards of it. Trees, native plants, rain barrels, composting, food waste, energy, gardening, enjoying nature and the outdoors are some of the subjects that we cover during our time together.
If you would like your child to be part of this group, please fill out the Get2Green Interest Form (link is fixed) so we know what your availability is.
Also, send your child to collect a permission slip from Mrs. Essimi, in the library for you to sign by the end of the week.
For questions or additional information, please contact Mrs. Essimi (rmessimimen@fcps.edu); Mrs. Michalski (rlmichalski@fcps.edu) or Mrs. Eaton (lreaton@fcps.edu).

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.
Parents may sign up for a Lightspeed Weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance web page for tips and strategies.
Cell Phone Policy
Thank you for helping to support the FCPS cell phone policy by waiting to call or text your child about non-urgent matters until the school day is over. In case of an emergency, it is always best to contact the school’s front office to reach your child during class time.
Visit the FCPS Cell Phone Policy webpage to read more about usage policies by grade level and to share your feedback on the current cell phone policy.
FCPS Cares
FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize those who go above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all acknowledge the outstanding work of FCPS and specifically Franklin Sherman.

Students Rights and Responsibilities
FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R.
Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30.
You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.
Reporting All Day Absences
FCPS has created clearer guidance for reporting attendance. Please use using one of the methods below:

-
Call the school's attendance line at 703-506-7979.
-
Email the front office at franklinshermanelem.attendance@fcps.edu. When emailing an absence or tardy, please include your child's first and last name and their teacher's name.
All Day Absences: The Attendance feature in ParentVUE is the FCPS secure web solution for reporting all day absences.
