September 11 Family Newsletter
Today marks the 23rd anniversary of September 11. FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.
As we approach our first 3-hour early release on Monday, September 23rd, we expect students to follow their regular routes home. To ensure student safety, please complete this form to confirm your plans for each student. During this time, our instructional staff will be involved in professional development, so it’s crucial we have an accurate count of families needing supervision to plan accordingly.
Tomorrow evening Liberty Middle School will be hosting a Fire Safety Night at 7:00 pm. Additional details can be found below.

Students in Mrs. Fisher's first grade class communicate and collaborate as they come up with a plan to design their own park.
Questions families can ask at home to support communication and collaboration.
- How did you help someone in your group today?
- Were there moments when your group struggled? How did you handle that?
- What ideas did you share today? What were some ways you shared your ideas?
- How did you listen to other points of view? What did you learn from them?

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. For more information about the FLE program and lessons, or if you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, please see the Elementary (K-6) FLE Website.

Save the Date - Union Mill Fun Run 2024
We're excited to introduce this year's main fundraiser, the Union Mill Fun Run, sponsored by our UMES PTA. Our goal this year is to raise $50,000 for classroom technology needs, Math & Science Night, and flexible seating and carpet replacement in classrooms to benefit ALL students at Union Mill Elementary.
We're excited for this fundraising experience because it offers three important things to our school community:
1. User-friendly fundraising platform
2. Character enrichment program
3. Fitness-focused event that includes ALL of our students
As a family, you will work together asking friends and family to donate on your student's Donation Page at MyBooster.com. The best part is, you can still support our school just by SHARING about the fundraiser!
Students will also experience an amazing character enrichment program called "Castle Quest", teaching students about how to be brave and live with character.
Key Dates to Remember:
September 18th - Fundraiser Kickoff in School
September 26th - Event Day/Fun Run
More details to come! Follow our social pages and sign up to be a PTA member for updates on our fundraiser.
