September 11 National Day of Service With the upcoming 23rd anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.
All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Middle and high school students can learn more about service learning by logging into their Naviance account to access x2VOL.

Reflection and Silent Space Accommodations
As we begin a new school year, let’s be mindful of the Expectations for Meditation and Silent Reflection Accommodation Regulation. This new regulation was developed last Spring to ensure that students and staff, regardless of religious backgrounds, have reasonable accommodations and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within their school or building. This effort aligns with the FCPS’ commitment to providing students and staff with a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive work environment.
Students are only permitted to use Meditation and Silent Reflection rooms during instructional time when a request cannot be accommodated in any other way that does not impact instruction. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students to miss instructional time regularly.
If you would like to give permission for your child to miss instructional time for prayer or meditation, please complete this form.
Pyramid Carnival and Homecoming Parade
Pyramid Night is Today! Come out to support our classes and PTSA! We’ll have Kona Ice, Roaming Coyote, Mr. Softee, Two Smooth Dudes and more amazing food trucks that support our classes! We are also so excited to have Alpacas, inflatables, a dunk tank, cotton candy, face painting, balloon twisting and more free fun!
Do you have a convertible, jeep or pick up truck? Would you be willing to drive your car in the homecoming parade on Friday the 27th? We need more cars to help show off our amazing students! Please reach out to nmmarkey@fcps.edu or jibritton@fcps.edu if you are able to drive! Please also consider donating candy to the high school classes for them to give out during the Homecoming Parade!
LBSS Band Tag Day
Lake Braddock Band and Color Guard will be out in the Lake Braddock Community Saturday from 9-1 looking for support of our band program to help raise funds for uniforms, equipment, instruments, and music.
PSAT/NMSQT Exam and SAT School Day
On Wednesday, October 9, 10th and 11th grade students will be taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) exam, and all registered 12th grade students will be participating in SAT School Day. Please note that all 10th and 11th graders will automatically be registered for this assessment; there is not separate registration process for the PSAT as there is with SAT.
School Day Schedule
All FCPS high schools will operate on a two-hour early release schedule. High school academy courses and all high school shuttles will be canceled on this day.
- Students receiving low incidence special education services receive a normal instructional program if not participating in the PSAT/NMSQT or SAT School Day
- Grades 7 & 8 will attend school with a modified schedule to be released at a later date
- Grade 9 students do not attend school this day
- Grade 10-11 students take the PSAT/NMSQT, with limited exceptions
- Grade 12 students who registered for the SAT by the September 4 deadline should arrive to their testing location before 8:00 am. Those choosing not to take the SAT and who did not register will not attend school this day. If your student decides NOT to take this SAT test before October 9, please have them reach out to Mrs. Fava to cancel the registration at TCFava@fcps.edu with no penalty.
- Students taking the PSAT or SAT must bring their school issued device to assess. If your student did not check out a device from tech, it is HIGHLY advised that they check one out as loaners are not available. If a student arrives without the device, they will be dismissed from testing without an opportunity for make-up. Schools do not have ample supplies for loaners.
- Grab and go lunch will be provided for students prior to dismissal.
Please make every effort to not schedule appointments during this assessment time if your student plans to participate. Please note that absences will only be excused based on the county absence policy noted here: https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/leadership/policies-regulations-notices/attendance-policies. Please note that for test security reasons as designated by College Board, students will not be permitted to leave their testing room until all participants have submitted their tests.

Immunization Requirements
Please check with your health care provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.
You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to your school’s front office.
Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided to your school’s front office, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:
- A health care provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations.
- A health care provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with their religious tenets or practices.
Find more information on immunizations.
Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance
As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.
Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Overdose Awareness and Understanding the Dangers of Opioids
In Northern Virginia, consistent with national and state trends, the opioid epidemic continues to impact communities, including young adults and school-age children. Opioids are a class of drugs used to treat pain and can include prescription medication and illegal drugs.
Tragically, their misuse can lead to devastating outcomes. Fentanyl is an extremely fatal and especially powerful opioid, even in small doses. Most fatal overdoses in Fairfax County in recent years have involved fentanyl.
August 31 is Overdose Awareness Day. There are three things you can do now to support student wellness and increase understanding of the dangers of opioids and fentanyl:
- Talk with children and loved ones in your life about the dangers of drug use, especially opioids. For more information about substance use among youth, tips on how to recognize and prevent substance abuse, and available support services, please watch this webinar.
- Safely store and dispose of medications, including prescription pain medications, to prevent drug misuse.
- Sign up for a Virtual REVIVE! training class to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose and administer naloxone nasal spray to reverse an opioid overdose.
Learn more about the dangers of opioids and available resources on our website. Visit the Student Safety and Wellness webpage for more information on topics related to student well-being.
