Principal Burke and JROTC students at Back to School Night
Dear Edison Families,
The school year has begun with great enthusiasm, and it's been fantastic to witness students fully engaging in their classes, clubs, and activities. I have a few important reminders to share as we move through the school year.
Attendance and Tardiness:
It is crucial for students to be in class and prepared to learn by 8:10 AM every day. Being punctual sets students up for academic success, and being consistently late can significantly impact their progress. I've observed a pattern of students arriving on time by bus, but then leaving campus to grab breakfast at McDonald's, causing them to be late for school. Please remind your student that they must proceed directly to school upon arrival. Students who are habitually late without a valid reason will face detention. Additionally, students who miss 15 or more days of school, whether excused or unexcused, are considered chronically absent, which can also significantly affect their academic success. We encourage daily attendance to support your student's educational journey.
Food Deliveries:
I want to reiterate that food deliveries to school are not allowed. These deliveries pose a security risk on our campus. Any food delivered will be declined, and students will not be able to retrieve it—it will be disposed of. Please ensure that your student brings their lunch or utilizes our school cafeteria options.
Closed Campus Policy:
Edison operates as a closed campus, meaning students are not permitted to leave school grounds during the school day unless checked out by a guardian. This is crucial for maintaining the safety and supervision of all students. Please remind your student of this policy and help us ensure everyone's safety and accountability during the school day.
Cell Phone Policy:
Thank you to all our families for supporting the FCPS cell phone policy. I want to remind you that in case of emergencies, teachers take their phone holders with them, ensuring students will still have access to their devices if necessary. We appreciate your continued cooperation as we strive to create the best possible learning environment for all students.
Once again, I want to express my gratitude for the positive start to the school year. Your support is critical to our success, and I look forward to continuing to work together to make this year a great one!

In alignment with FCPS Regulation 1502, Schools ensure that students and staff of all religious backgrounds have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection space within the school building.
FCPS supports students who need to take time during the school day to practice as their faith requires. If your student needs to be excused from a portion of at least one class to meditate and pray, please complete the google form: https://forms.gle/VnMpbgGwXPkYnabt7 to provide permission for your student to regularly miss instructional time to access our meditation and silent reflection space. This would mean that your student would regularly miss instructional time. By doing so, your student will be responsible for all work that needs to be completed or made up.
- 🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance
As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.
Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.
Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
We invite you to attend the Senior Parent Information Night on September 24th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. We are eager to share details regarding homecoming, prom, graduation, and other exciting events for our seniors. The meeting will be held in the auditorium.
