Message from the Principal

Powell families,

It has been an exciting week at Powell!

Thank you to all of the families that attended BTSN. We appreciate the time shared to learn about the school year ahead!

We would like to give a big shoutout to Ocean, 2nd grade student, for creating our inaugural display in the YOU-seum to showcase what makes him unique! When you are visiting, please check out the showcase in the lobby outside the cafeteria. It will be redecorated everyone two weeks by different students to showcase what makes our students unique. This month, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. If your child or friendship group would like to sign up to share makes you Uniquely You, please sign up here:  https://tinyurl.com/y3sn2uca

Message from our Art Teachers – Original Works Fundraiser

This week students finished their Uniquely You Hands artwork for Original Works! We are so proud of what our Puma artists have accomplished! They will look amazing as a keepsake! The next step is to package and send all the artwork to Original Works for processing. Each artwork is scanned, and uploaded into our school’s Online Gallery. Once we receive the ordering instructions, we will send them home in Tuesday folders. The ordering window will run from October 24th to November 7th. Continue to look for updates here in the Puma Press and on your students Art Schoology page. Any questions?  Please reach out to one of our art teachers, Maria Gangitano at mgangitano@fcps.edu or Margret Washington at mswashington@fcps.edu

Thank you for supporting this unique and creative program!

Picture Day

What to expect on picture day

  1. When an order is placed online, the parent/guardian will receive a camera pass via email. This can either be printed or texted to the student and brought to picture day. The photographer will photograph the printed camera pass along with the student.
  2. If a student is not able to print their camera pass, that is not a problem. We will match up the student to their order manually in the production process.
  3. A parent may order from the flyer up until 24 hours after picture day. After 24 hours, the online ordering access may close. This will allow our imaging team to "Pull" all orders submitted and match them with the students photographed.
  4. When pictures are returned to school, all students that purchased pictures will receive their prepaid package. Any student that was photographed but did not order a package, will receive a "Proof" (PX) of their picture that was taken on picture day.

All proof packages offer parents a second opportunity to order prints. All orders are subject to shipping and handling costs of up to $8.50 and will be shipped directly to home.

SEL Screener

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school.  Powell ES students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information about the SEL Screener including information on opting out please see below Notification of Testing. You can also learn more on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
