Message from Mr. Greata

UPDATE: Cav Carnival tonight has been moved inside to Cavalier Hall due to impending weather! Enter through Door 3.

Tonight marks a special occasion with Feeder Night, Cav Carnival, and the Dance! These events hold a special place in my heart. As I approach my one-year anniversary as principal at Carter G. Woodson High School, this will be my third Feeder Night. It's a fantastic event that brings together students and staff from across our entire pyramid, and I love watching all of our youngest Cavaliers run across the football field. Watching from the vantage point in the end zone is truly thrilling!

I hope you can join us this evening for games for the younger students starting at 5:00 pm in Cavalier Hall. The running of the field is just prior to the game at 6:45pm and after the game, Woodson students can celebrate the start of the school year at our annual Back to School Dollar Dance - still only a dollar!

It was great to see all of our senior families last night for Senior Information Night, what a great turnout. Our guest speaker, Pat Money, from George Mason University, provided some excellent insight. Most memorable for me was that students should apply for scholarships even if they only meet 60-70% of the criteria, and that most admissions put a bigger emphasis on your transcript, than standardized test scores. Thank you Christine Lieb-Mosley, Adrienne Wood, and Victoria Powell for organizing this event!

Next week, full implementation of our cell phone policy, including consequences, will begin. Check out this flyer which will be emailed to all parents next week with more details. Again, students have already been doing a great job of adhering to the policy already - Thank you students and families!

Late buses will start next week on Wednesday, September 4th.  Late buses will be available every Wednesday.

There is no school on Friday, August 30th, and Monday, September 2nd, to celebrate Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the long, relaxing weekend and we will see you tonight at the CAV Carnival and the Feeder Night Game against Yorktown!

Labor Day

Friday, August 30, and Monday, September 2, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day.

Cell Phones Off, Learning On

Thank you for helping to support the FCPS cell phone policy by waiting to call or text your child about non-urgent matters until the school day is over. In case of an emergency, it is always best to contact Woodson's Main Office at 703-503-4600 to reach your child during class time.

Visit the FCPS Cell Phone Policy webpage to read more about usage policies by grade level and to share your feedback on the current cell phone policy.

Schedule Change Request Process

The schedule change request window for this year is now open through Friday, September 6th.

During this time, students may complete the online schedule request change google form to request a change to one of their classes. The form was posted to the All Students Schoology Course this past Monday morning, and is only accessible to students.

Counselors will process submitted forms in the order in which they are received. If space is available in the requested course then the change will be made; if not then the change will not be made. Students will receive an email from their counselor to their FCPSschools.net account to update them on the status of their change request.

Please allow up to 2 days for requests to be processed due to the high volume being submitted. While students simply need to complete the form to submit a request, students or parents may always contact their counselor if they have any questions or need any assistance.

Update Emergency Care Form Information

Information must be correct and is what we will use in case of an emergency. We are asking all parents/guardians to review and update via SIS ParentVUE. If you have more than one child enrolled in FCPS, updating it for one student will update it for all of your students. Having the most up-to-date information for all of our students is essential to our ability to best meet all students' needs in the event of an emergency.

Woodson Football Gate and Game Expectations

Football Gate Entrances and Procedures

Tonight is our First Home Varsity Football game versus Yorktown at 7:00pm. We want to remind you that the following guidelines are in effect to ensure that all of our patrons, students, and parents enjoy the true spirit of the event:

  • Cost of tickets are $5 for students and $7 for Adults, and can be purchased at the gate or ahead of time through this E-tix link.
  • Patrons will not be allowed to enter the stadium with athletic equipment such as bats, balls, sticks, etc.
  • Backpacks are not allowed.  Everyone entering the stadium is subject to search.
  • Patrons will not be allowed to enter the stadium with outside food or containers such as water bottles, cups, cans, etc.
  • We welcome all members of the community to attend our games, but parents are needed to attend and monitor middle and elementary aged students.  All attendees, regardless of age, are expected to behave responsibly.
  • Woodson High School (including the parking lots) is a drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free zone.  Adults and students who are determined to be in violation of regulations restricting the possession or being under the influence of drugs, alcohol and/or tobacco will be dealt with accordingly, including being subject to arrest by police.
  • Representatives from the Fairfax County Police Department, the Woodson Administration, and the Woodson Security Staff will continue to monitor the activities of our patrons in the parking lot, at the ticket gate, and inside the stadium to promote a safe and secure environment for both Woodson fans, our visitors, and guests.
  • For varsity football games, once you pay and enter the stadium you may not leave and reenter. Please plan accordingly.

Woodson HS students and parents are asked to demonstrate good citizenship and spirited sportsmanship to our opponents and their fans.  Any clothing that includes negative references to opposing teams/schools will not be tolerated.  The Woodson Cavalry is considered the best fans in Virginia! Let’s show everyone that we are #Cavstrong.

Woodson Career Day - Speakers Needed

We are beginning to organize our career day at Woodson High School on October 31 from 8:30-12:05pm. We are looking for guest speakers!

Each speaker will share how they got started, successes, challenges, and what skills they use on the job today. Our goal is for students to learn more about the multitude of career options available to them and to make connections between the careers and our Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes that emphasize life skills such as communication, collaboration, resilience, citizenship, and critical and creative thinking.

While we will have three sessions we understand it is a large piece of the day and if you could make even one or two of the sessions it would be a meaningful experience for our students. Each session will run approximately 50 minutes to allow for your presentation and a brief question and answer session. If you are available October 31 and would like to know more about the day please let us know. Interested speakers should complete the form linked here by Friday, September 20 to confirm your participation.
