Dear Wildcats,

We are so impressed with how quickly our students acclimated back into the building. It's like they never left Hemlock Drive. Part of that familiarity comes from how teachers and staff keep our mission and goals centered on student success.

At Woodburn, we follow a “Responsive Classroom” approach, which is a student-centered, social, and emotional learning design that creates safe, interactive and engaging classrooms communities for both students and teachers. At the beginning of the year, a large focus for our teachers and staff is building relationships with the goal to sustain and grow these relationships both with structure and organically. You won’t hear us talk about the “rules of the classroom” but rather, the community we’re looking to cultivate.

Woodburn is fortunate to have it’s first ever Early Childhood Inclusion Program up-and-running this week. We couldn’t be more fortunate to have Ms. Marisa LaPiana captaining this work. The connection with our littlest learners is key to helping them get the start they need for an enriching educational journey. They represent the joy and spirit in all of our Wildcats. We want to thank you for making this August a month to remember. We’re looking forward to more adventures in September and beyond.

Together We Grow,

Kelley and Matt

Safety Drills

Schools are required by the state of Virginia to conduct safety drills within the first 20 days of school. Today, students and staff did a super job executing our first fire drill. We will have another fire drill in the next two weeks.

We are also required to hold a lockdown drill at the beginning of the first and second semesters. Our first lockdown drill will be on September 5 (preK and kindergarten students will not participate in the fall lockdown).  Additional information about the FCPS lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page.

Our first bus evacuation drill will be during the week of September 16.

Students use hula hoops to build a spherical tower.

6th grades took the Hula Hut Architect challenge to the next level! Mr. Shirley shared that this is the highest Hula Hut he's ever seen!

Back to School Night

Woodburn is excited to invite you to our annual Back to School Night on Thursday, September 18 from 6:00-7:30pm.  Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to meet with teachers and learn important detailed information about academic outcomes for each subject, expectations for the school year, support for students, communication methods for parents, and more. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for your family conference at the end of the quarter.

A bus will be provided from Fairmont Gardens main office entrance (4137 Wadsworth Ct.) to Woodburn at 5:40pm and will depart from Woodburn at 7:30pm.

Emergency Care and Health Forms

Emergency Care Forms and Health Forms will be sent home in Thursday folders today. Please update these forms and return to your student's teacher.

Update Your Child's Immunizations Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

We are readers! Students across the building worked this week to build their reading stamina.

2024-25 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R.

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Friday, September 30.

Lightspeed Parent Report

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.
