Dear Dragon Families,
We know that one of the best ways to support your child’s success in school is by staying engaged and partnering with us. That’s why we’re excited to invite you to a PTA interest meeting on September 11th at 6 PM at Dogwood Elementary School. We will have Spanish translation services. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn how you can contribute your time and support to our school community. Your involvement is key, and we’d love to hear your voice in shaping your child’s experience at school.
Additionally, we want to make you aware of our upcoming 3-hour early release Mondays, which will occur on seven Mondays throughout the school year. To help us plan effectively, we need your input. Please take a moment to complete the 3-hour early release survey https://forms.gle/Up8i1tJxVaKdJVaE7—100% participation is essential for us to move forward with our plans. You’ll find more information below.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we can make this school year a great one!
Thank you for your continued support,
Kate Beckner
Proud Principal
Early Release Monday’s
Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.
The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year with dismissal at 12:35 PM.
- September 23
- October 28
- November 25
- February 24
- March 17
- April 28
- May 19
To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/Up8i1tJxVaKdJVaE7 for each of your children who are enrolled at Dogwood Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.
Attendance
Thank you, families, for establishing routines that support daily attendance. Our teachers are planning and teaching lessons and daily routines. 556 of our 651 students in K-6 were present for the first eight days of school! Please remember missing 2 days a month over the year adds up! At Dogwood we are only allowed to miss 9 days of school for the whole year!
Update Your Child’s Immunizations and Records
Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.
You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.
If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.
Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

Labor Day
Friday, August 30, and Monday, September 2, is the Labor Day holiday for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.
