Monday, September 2nd - Labor Day Break (Holiday)
Powell Families,
We had a fantastic second week of school! The smiles on everyone’s faces brought our building back to joyful life following the summer break. We are grateful to have strong connections and partnerships with our students, families, staff, and community. We are excited about all the possibilities that this year holds.
As you know, FCPS has designated seven Mondays throughout the year as 3 hour early release days: September 23, October 28, December 9 (new date to replace November 25), February 24, March 17, April 28, and May 19.
As we approach the first date, we expect our Pumas to follow their regular routes home. To ensure their safety please complete THIS SURVEY for each child as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. Students that require supervision due to hardship will be supervised by staff. Teachers will be involved in required professional development and will not be working with students during this time. Your response is essential in helping us move forward smoothly.
We wish everyone a wonderful Labor Day weekend! If you are traveling, we wish you safe travels. We’ll see you back at school on Tuesday!
Best,
Jamie Luerssen Principal

Please be aware that all of us are getting used to new routines at the start of the school year. Thank you for your patience as those routines are established. We continue to welcome parents to join their kids for lunch during the school year. These visits may start on September 3rd. We ask that parents refrain from bringing in outside fast food .
Parents and guardians that visit during lunch, please take a moment to review these important reminders:
- Due to the limited seating, as well as assigned seats in some classes, please allow all students to be seated before sitting at a table with your child. At times, there may not be extra seating for parents and guardians and we appreciate your understanding if and when this occurs.
- Parents and guardians are welcome to eat while visiting in the cafeteria, and while at lunch please help our cafeteria attendants and school staff by assisting all students in the class, as needed. This might be to retrieve a forgotten fork, napkin or ketchup or simply open something for a student.
- For safety and accountability of our students, students may only leave the cafeteria or go to the bathroom if school staff give permission. If a student asks a parent or guardian, please ask the child to continue to raise their hand so school staff can address their need.
-
Outside (restaurant) food is not permitted during lunch. Please do not bring these items for your child.
-
Students may only pass through the lunch line one time. Once seated, please do not permit students to leave their seat to return to the line for additional food, drink or lunch items.
As always, as questions arise please don’t hesitate to ask the cafeteria hostesses for clarification. Together we can do this!
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent. Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school. Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.
Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology. Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.
Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to fle@fcps.edu.
Back-to-School Night is an opportunity for parents to attend an informational session presented by the teacher to learn about the year ahead and the grade level expectations. This event is intended for parents/guardians only.
New this year, each BTSN presentation will be given twice so it occurs during Session A & B on the scheduled night for the grade level. This will provide flexibility for parents needing to attend multiple grade level sessions or multiple sessions within a grade level such as immersion and non-immersion or immersion and local level-IV.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Powell ES students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information about the SEL Screener including information on opting out please see below Notification of Testing. You can also learn more on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
