Students on the football field at sunrise

Edison seniors woke up early to watch the sunrise on the football field!

Message from Principal Burke

Dear Edison Families,

What a fantastic first week of school we’ve had! It was wonderful to see our students and staff so engaged in building relationships and getting to know one another. The energy in the building was palpable as we kicked off the new year together.

We also had a great turnout at our Eagle SOAR event yesterday. It was exciting to see so many of our clubs promoting themselves and students exploring all the opportunities for involvement this school year. It’s clear that our students are eager to get involved and make the most of their time here at Edison.

Another highlight was seeing our football team in action during a scrimmage against Marshall HS—an exciting game made even better by the beautiful weather. We are proud of our athletes and look forward to their continued success on the field this season.

In addition to Eagle SOAR, we held class meetings for our juniors and seniors, with plans to meet with our freshmen and sophomores on Monday. Our teachers have reported exceptional student engagement in lessons and various activities, and they’ve noticed a dramatic difference in the classroom atmosphere, just in this first week, without phones during class time. Students are adapting well to the new routine, and we appreciate your support in reinforcing our cell phone policy at home.

I look forward to seeing parents and guardians at Back to School Night on September 3rd. I also hope to see many of you at our upcoming sporting events and performing arts concerts in the weeks and months ahead. We’re excited about what’s to come and looking forward to a great year!

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Amanda Burke

Cell Phone

FCPS Cell Phone Policy Implementation at Edison HS:

As detailed in a letter sent to all families on August 12, 2024, Edison High School will be following the FCPS School Board Policy that was adopted at its meeting on May 9. Here are the key points:

  • Cell phones may be used on campus before the first bell, after the last bell, during passing periods, and lunches.
  • There will be cell phone storage cases in every classroom. All students shall put their phones in the cell phone storage case at the beginning of class. They will then pick it back up at the end of class.
  • Phone accessories are also to be silenced and away when phone use is prohibited. Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students with a documented health or educational need through special services may have an exception. Please work through your child’s administrator if you believe an exception is needed.
  • You can find more information on FCPS’ cell phone policy webpage (for all schools) and cell phone storage webpage (for schools that are getting storage containers). Both of these webpages include a button to provide feedback.

At Edison HS, we are dedicated to making sure all our students, staff and families feel connected and engaged. Our focus is on helping every student succeed in their learning while also supporting their social and emotional well-being.  As we implement the FCPS cell phone policy we ask for your support as we learn and apply these new practices together.

Your partnership is key to making Edison High School a place where every student can thrive. Thank you for your continued support as we work together for a great year ahead.

Immunizations

Make Sure Your Students Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your student has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your family's healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. Be wise and immunize!

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.
