FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Cherry Run

From the Principal's Desk:

Good afternoon families!!

We have successfully completed our first week back to school!  We kicked the year off with a GREAT PTA bash, Open House, and getting to walk students to class the first day.  Our Boo-Hoo/Woo-Hoo was a success as well.  I have been able to get into every classroom, every day this week and saw a LOT of smiling faces.  I had the privledge of walking Dr. Reid (Superintendent) and Mrs. Anderson (School Board) around the school on the first day.  Our new Region 4 Assistant Superintendent, Pablo Resendiz, visited us on Wednesday and was able to tour the school as well.  We had so many wonderful compliments on the staff, the engagement of the students, and even the building being shiny and warm.  I am very proud of our school community!

Next week, we do have a short week as we roll into Labor Day weekend and the month of September.  Friday of next week and Monday of the week after are student holidays and the school is closed.

In two weeks, LBSS will be hosting their 2nd annual "Pyramid Night".  There is a flyer and details listed below.  This was a LOT of fun last year!!

Please enjoy the beautiful weather and we look forward to seeing all of our students back on Monday!

Sincerely,

Mark Bibbee

Reid

Dr. Reid and School Board Member Sandy Anderson visited Cherry Run Elementary on the first day of school.  While stopping by multiple classrooms, Dr. Reid spoke with students and saw teachers consistently implementing the new Literacy Basal during Language Arts.   Additionally, while touring the whole school with Principal Mark Bibbee and Assistant Principal Miranda Goss (all pictured in Cardinal picture), they enjoyed taking a walk through Cherry Run’s new outdoor learning space called “The Nature Nook.” This nature-based space was specially designed to support students’ mental health and wellness.

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to HCTB@fcps.edu.

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

Student Attendance

attendance

  • 🙋 Student Attendance and Engagement

During the Academic Matters segment of the November 9 School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid discussed student attendance and engagement. Attendance and absenteeism rates are one measure for Goal 2 of our 2023-30 Strategic Plan

Chronic absenteeism — which is defined as a student missing 10% or more of school for any reason — is a concern across Virginia school districts. Although FCPS continues to outperform the state average in attendance rates, we are tracking chronic absenteeism closely.

Data shows that:

  • Missing just 10% of school — just two days a month — negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
  • Only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade, compared to 64% of those with good attendance.
  • Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school.
  • By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

Attendance is critical for academic success!

Missing School Over the Holidays

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, please speak with your child’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work. However, a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that happens in the classroom.

Visit FCPS’ website for more attendance resources.

Staff Spotlight

Stacy Huisman

My name is Stacy Huisman and I’m the new Family Liaison at Cherry Run Elementary School. Every school in FCPS has a Family Liaison and we all support the individual needs of our school a little differently depending on the needs of the school.  My role at Cherry Run is to support families who might be new to FCPS, especially those families who experience school transition frequently such as as military families.  I also work as a Family Liaison at Sangster ES and am starting my fourth year at Sangster.

I understand the lifestyle and the unique challenges (and adventures) of military families.  I’m a military spouse. My husband recently retired after 28 years of service with the Air Force. I have two children who have moved and changed schools more than I have fingers to count. I’m sending my son off to college this year, so I’m here to send lots of encouragement to those who have and will face multiple school moves over the next several years.  I’m a subject matter expert on military-connected children in public school. I’ve been advocating and supporting parents for nearly two decades as a journalist, advocate, published author, and as a parent.

If you are new to the FCPS or have questions about FCPS, I’m happy to help. I have a plethora of resources available from FCPS, local community, and military community. I’ll add those at the News You Choose for Cherry Run.  If you are looking for something specific, please don’t hesitate to reach out.  I’m available to all families!

For my military families, if you are comfortable sharing, please keep us informed of current or upcoming deployments. Also, if you are geo-baching, have an upcoming move, and/or anything else you’d like to share about your military family, I'm available to you!
