🐾Counselors' Corner

Welcome Cameron Families,

Your School Counselors are so excited to begin a new year of supporting your family through all of the wonderful things your child will experience at Cameron Elementary.  Sometimes going back to school can be a major transition, especially for younger students.  They may experience separation anxiety or just an overall hesitancy to begin their day.   The article How to Cope with Back to School Anxiety is about decreasing the stress in getting your child out the door to school these first few weeks.

We look forward to working with you in support of your child’s social emotional wellness. If you need additional information, please feel free to reach out to us at:

As we welcome back our students and get to know the new students at Cameron, I would like to share essential facts about attendance with you. Learning in elementary school, starting in kindergarten, is sequential; each day builds on earlier learning. So, each day absent is a missed opportunity for your child to learn something they will need to understand more complex material later.

I am sharing some ideas to help your child not miss school. Parents can make a significant difference by helping their children attend school daily. Please review the list and choose strategies that fit your daily schedule.

Possible Strategies for Good Attendance and Participation

  • I will talk to my child about how attending/participating in school every day will help my child do well in school and achieve my child’s hopes and
  • I will keep an attendance/participation chart at home to track absences.
  • At the end of the week, I will recognize my child for attending/participating in school daily (i.e., a visit to the park, a new book, a break from doing chores, a special treat,)
  • I will establish routines for bedtime, waking up, and showing up for
  • I will develop backup plans for getting my child to school in person, logging in to class, or completing an assignment when I can’t be there to help. I will identify a family member, a neighbor, or an older child who can
  • If my child is absent, I will contact the teacher to find out what was
  • If my child seems bored, I will contact the teacher to discuss how we might make sure my child is engaged in
  • I will help keep my child healthy by making sure my child wears a mask as needed and gets a flu vaccine and other required
  • I will set up non-urgent medical and dental appointments for weekdays after

🎂Birthday Celebration Guidelines

We are providing an update for the revised 2024-2025 school year Birthday Celebration Guidelines. We’re excited to continue celebrating our students' birthdays at Cameron in a way that is both special and manageable for everyone. To ensure these celebrations are enjoyable and smooth, we’ve established some new guidelines. Please note that these celebrations are completely optional and not mandatory.

Birthday Celebration Guidelines:

  1. Timing: All birthday celebrations will take place during the lunch period. If you choose to bring treats, please ensure that you are present to distribute them so that our teachers can enjoy their lunch break. Some examples are: cupcakes, cookies, or stickers!
  2. Treats: For safety and consistency, all treats must be store-bought and come with an ingredients list. Some examples are: cupcakes, cookies, or stickers! Unfortunately, homemade treats cannot be accepted.
  3. Allergy-Friendly Option: To ensure every child can join in the fun, please provide an allergy-friendly treat for the class.

We’re here to help make every student’s birthday special. Teachers will also recognize birthdays in their own way in the classroom, which may include singing, giving a pencil, or providing a crown. If you have any questions or need support with these guidelines, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Our Commitment to Excellence, Equity, and Opportunity for Each and Every Student

As we begin a new school year, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid reminds us of the goals of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which guides us in delivering excellence, equity, and opportunity for each and every one of our students. Watch Dr. Reid’s message.

🚌Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.

If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Emails or texts will be sent to announce significant bus delays. For any concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE

🔍 Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Update Your Child’s Immunizations and Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.
