🚍 School Transportation Information
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following kiss-and-ride procedures and being patient while waiting for school buses.
If a bus is delayed, parents/caregivers may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Visit the Transportation Services webpage to find out who to contact with specific questions.
To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.
🚗Student Pickup and Transportation Change Procedures
Creating a sense of calm and routine at the end of the day is very important for our students and teachers. They are completing lessons and getting ready for dismissal.
Here are procedures that we have in place that create the least amount of disruption to the classroom during the day.
- Send a note in your child’s backpack, email the teacher, let the office know that your child will be dismissed early.
- Change of Transportation form on home page of website: all online requests must be made by 12:00 pm. For any changes or emergencies after 12:00 pm, please contact the office at 703-326-3100.
-
All changes in transportation and student pick-ups must be made by 3:30pm. We will not be able to honor any changes after that time unless it is a dire emergency.
Please let your child and the school know the plan that morning. They will appreciate it and we will too!
🎒Please Label your Child's Belongings
We have been back to school for less than a week and we already have a few items in lost and found. These belongings do not have a name.
Please label their belongings such as lunch box, backpack, water bottles, sweatshirts and jackets that they can take off when they get warm.
Until they get into the routine, please check when they get home from school if they have everything. If not, please ask them to check lost and found or the office at school.
Labeling them is the best way to help us return them to your child!
✔️ Parent/Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms?
During the first weeks of the year, schools mail and email caregivers many forms to complete. Several of the most important ones are below:
-
Make sure you have a SIS ParentVUE account for your family and log in to find forms and updates. If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child's school for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account Registration webpage.
-
Update Contact Information: Provide your cell phone number and email in ParentVUE for weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from your school and FCPS. To update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then click the “Online Verification/Update” icon.
-
Digital Resources Consent: Some FCPS-approved digital resources require parent/caregiver consent before they can be used by students. the Parent Digital Consent system online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account. Visit the Parent Digital Consent Directions webpage to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool.
-
Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R): This document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when they log in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned as soon as possible.
-
Opt-Outs: The Opt-Out booklet is online or available from your child’s school. FCPS provides explanations of the rights as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available—a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version.
Paper forms can be signed and returned to your child’s school.
⏰ Limited Early Release Mondays at HES
Providing an excellent education to all students and meeting individual student needs requires appropriate planning time for teachers. This means teachers need a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with peers.
With that in mind, FCPS has developed a division wide plan for seven three-hour early release days (Mondays) for elementary students in the 2024-25 school year.
Early release Mondays for elementary schools in the following pyramids are planned for the dates below: Herndon, Langley, Madison, Marshall, McLean, South Lakes, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Oakton, Robinson, and Westfield.
HERNDON ELEMENTARY will release at 1:05pm on the following dates.
- September 23
- October 28
- November 25
- February 24
- March 17
- April 28
- May 19
To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/3ZQqThCgButjMvkN9 for each of your children who are enrolled at Herndon Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.
