Welcome Walk 2024! We loved seeing all of our Cubbies!
Cub Run News
Cubbie Corner
Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,
Welcome to the 2024-25 school year! We are thrilled to welcome our Cubbies back to school on Monday, August 19. Last week, we had a great time welcoming our kindergarten students to Cub Run! We had fun at our kindergarten playdates and our kinder camp. We had the best time at our Welcome Walk and Open House welcoming our students and families. It was wonderful to see our smiling Cubbie faces ready for the new school year!
Thank you to our phenomenal PTA for sponsoring Capitol Snow at Open House and for providing our staff with lunch after our Welcome Walk. We are grateful for your partnership and support!
Our teachers and staff have been busy preparing for our Cubbies to return and they are excited to kick-off this school year! Our staff is focused on building strong relationships, providing meaningful and engaging learning experiences, and providing a safe, positive, and welcoming learning environment for each of our students. Cub Run is implementing a positive behavior approach (PBA) this year including components of responsive classroom and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The Cubbie C.A.R.E.S. expectations and the PBA approach help to support our Cub Run Vision:
We envision Cub Run as a place of belonging and learning rooted in equity, compassion, connection, and engagement.
Our goal is to use this approach to encourage the expected positive behaviors regarding safety, empathy, responsibility, community, and readiness. These are behaviors that we will support students in demonstrating through instruction and reinforcement. We want every staff member to recognize as many students as possible for demonstrating these behaviors. Along with our schoolwide Positive Behavior Approach (PBA) we will be teaching positive character traits through the Positivity Project. We are enthusiastic about Cubbie C.A.R.E.S. and the positive impact it will have on our school community.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend. We look forward to welcoming our Cubbies back to school on Monday! Get ready for a year filled with fun, learning, and growth!
Warm regards,
Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Preparing for the First Day of School
Our doors open at 8:30 AM for students to enter the building. The school day begins at 8:40 AM when students are expected to be in their classrooms and ready to learn. Student dismissal is at 3:25 PM. Please review our arrival and dismissal procedures below to help us keep everyone safe. For the security of our students and staff, we do not have family members escort our Cubbies to their classrooms.
Dismissal Reminders
All students should know how they will be going home from school each day, whether they are a walker, bus rider, or kiss and rider. Please also work on remembering the following:
Walkers: Who they walk home with and where they are supposed to meet them
Kiss and Riders: Their Kiss and Ride number
Bus Riders: Their bus number and bus stop
Need to communicate an early dismissal or a change in dismissal plans for a particular day? Please contact our main office BEFORE NOON on the day of the change to notify both the front office and our classroom teachers of the dismissal change.
Kiss & Ride Procedures
Families may once again use the Kiss & Ride line this school year as a transportation option for students. Full instructions and rules about the Kiss & Ride transportation are below.
If you already have a Kiss & Ride number from the previous year, you will keep that number as long as your children are at Cub Run. If you don’t have a Kiss & Ride number, you can register for one by completing this form. A number will be assigned to your car to expedite the drop-off/pick-up process. You do not need this number immediately to go through the line. After registering, you will be given the number at pick-up time during the first week of school.
In order for the Cub Run staff to ensure a safe environment for all children, the following drop-off and pick-up procedures should be followed by all families. These procedures will be strictly adhered to each day. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our cubbies safe!
Morning Drop-off Procedures
- Drop off begins at 8:30 a.m.
- When entering the parking lot for the Kiss & Ride line, please do not block the crosswalk. Proceed to the side of the school and follow the loop around to the right.
-
Do not leave your child if there is no staff member present at Kiss & Ride. You must line up and wait at the starting location until a staff member is in position at Kiss & Ride to receive your child.
- The students may exit their vehicle on the right passenger side only. The left door should always be closed for safety purposes.
- All other individuals in the car should remain in the vehicle at all times for safety reasons.
- After dropping off your child, proceed to exit the Kiss & Ride line carefully. Use extreme caution when you get to Sully Station Drive, as walkers will be crossing at various times in a designated crosswalk. The crossing guard will use a stop sign to halt traffic when walkers are present.
-
Parents arriving after 8:40 a.m. must park and escort students to the main entrance (Door 1), where you check in your students in the front office.
Afternoon Pick-Up Procedures
- When entering the parking lot for the Kiss & Ride line, please do not block the crosswalk.
- When you arrive, please be sure to have your Kiss & Ride number card visibly displayed on your dashboard when you pull forward.
- All cars should move up as far as possible along the sidewalk so that we may get as many cars loaded as possible. Please do not stop directly in front of your child, as this will delay all of the cars behind you.
- Children may only enter their vehicle from the right side of the vehicle. The left door should always be closed for safety purposes, especially during dismissal time.
- Ensure that your child wears a seat belt and proceed to exit the Kiss & Ride loop carefully.
- Parents arriving after 3:45 p.m. must park and sign out students from the office staff.
Walker Procedures
In the afternoons, walkers are met at Door 4 by the playground. Kindergartner walkers are required to have an adult meet them.
Bus Riders
Arrival: All bus riders enter through door 1.
Dismissal: Kindergarten students will be escorted to their buses. All Kindergarten students must be met at the bus stop.
Students will watch for their bus numbers on our Silent Dismissal slide. Teachers will have bus number information to encourage students to leave at the appropriate time.

New Feature in ParentVue: Report Full-Day Absences
Starting on the first day of school, Monday, August 19, parents/caregivers can submit full-day absences through FCPS’ SIS ParentVUE platform. This will make reporting and tracking absences easier for our school.
Parents/caregivers may report absences by using ParentVUE or by contacting the front office. Please find important details below:
-
How to Use ParentVUE: Log in to your ParentVUE account and select “Report Absence.”
-
More Ways to Report: Use our attendance line at 703-633-7575 or email cubrunelem.attendance@fcps.edu for absences longer than two days, late arrivals, and early dismissals.
-
Where to Get Help: Visit FCPS’ Attendance Reporting webpage for step-by-step instructions.
If you need to set up a ParentVUE account or have questions, please contact our front office at 703-633-7500. They will provide you with an “activation key” and instructions to create a ParentVUE account. We are excited to see your student on August 19!
Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy
Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office at 703-633-7500.
Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, & Related Rights
Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.
In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.
Get more information and view the 2024-25 Opt-Out Booklets.
Update your Child's Immunization and Records
Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.
You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.
If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.
Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.
Reminders
Limited Early Release Mondays
The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.
The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:
- September 23, October 28, November 25, February 24, March 17, April 28 and May 19
To help plan for our school’s child care needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/4XSfVCSWgtwt4p9k7 for each of your children who are enrolled at Cub Run Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student. Please submit this form by August 19, 2024.
For additional information, FCPS has created this webpage that provides further detail about the early release Mondays.
SIS Parentvue
Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child.
Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE by using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.
Need help creating a SIS ParentVUE account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.
Prepare for Meals at School
Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.
The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today.
MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically as needed, and families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account.
Apply for Free and Reduced-Priced Meal
The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2024-25 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

Asha-Jyothi partners with schools by donating 100% of all registration money from each school back to the school for its STEM needs.
Please join us in supporting this wonderful organization.
