Dear Bee Families,

We hope you’ve had a wonderful summer filled with relaxation, fun, and special moments with loved ones. As the new school year begins, we are thrilled to welcome you back to school on Monday for what promises to be an exciting and enriching year ahead!

First Day of School: Our first day of school is just around the corner, on Monday. The school will open at 9:10, and we encourage all students to arrive on time, ready to start their new academic journey.

What to Expect: On the first day, students will have the opportunity to reconnect with friends, meet their new teachers, and get acquainted with their classrooms. Our staff has been hard at work preparing engaging and welcoming environments that reflect our commitment to making every child feel safe, supported, and valued.

A Year of Growth and Learning: This year, we are excited to introduce several new initiatives, including our focus on identity affirming classrooms, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). These programs will help us better meet the diverse needs of all our students, ensuring that every child has the tools and opportunities to succeed.

Important Reminders:

  • Please ensure that you review with your child how they will be going home.
  • Breakfast and lunch are free for our entire community.
  • Dismissal will begin at 4:05, and we ask that parents and guardians arrive promptly to pick up their children.

We are honored to partner with you in your child’s education and look forward to a fantastic year together. Let’s make this year one of growth, discovery, and joy for all our students!

If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact our office at (703) 326-3100. We are here to support you and ensure that your child has a successful and fulfilling school year.

📝School Supply Lists for 2024-25

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Herndon ES for the 2024-25 school year!

Our teachers have prepared a list of supplies that your child will need for school.  You may shop for these during the summer and bring them with you to the Back to School Bash on Thursday, August 15

Click here to access the grade level school supply lists on our Herndon ES website.

📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy and Storage Pilot

Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call their school’s main office.

At the May 9, 2024 School Board meeting, the School Board directed the superintendent to develop a pilot program for cell phone storage at FCPS. Starting with the 2024-25 school year, select middle schools will be cell phone free and each student will use a personal storage pouch. Select high schools will be cell phone free during all instructional times by using cell phone storage units in each classroom. Find more information on our cell phone storage webpage.

💻Catch Up on Your Child’s Classwork in Schoology

Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online, to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects, and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected.

A Schoology parent account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

Parent accounts will be available after Monday, August 19. To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS ParentVUE account. Find more information on how to log in and use Schoology.

🚸Kindergarten and New Student Registration for the 2024-25 School Year

We're excited to welcome our newest Herndon ES Bees for next year!  A child may enter kindergarten for this coming school year if he or she turns five on or before September 30, 2024.

If you have not registered your child, we are scheduling appointments for all rising kindergartners.  We have Spanish translators in the office and can arrange for other languages as well.  Please contact Shermin Sirajudin, our Student Information Assistant, by email at ssirajudin@fcps.edu or by phone at 703-326-3100.

⏰ Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

Providing an excellent education to all students and meeting individual student needs requires appropriate planning time for teachers. This means teachers need a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with peers.

With that in mind, FCPS has developed a division wide plan for seven three-hour early release days (Mondays) for elementary students in the 2024-25 school year.

Early release Mondays for elementary schools in the following pyramids are planned for the dates below: Herndon, Langley, Madison, Marshall, McLean, South Lakes, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Oakton, Robinson, and Westfield.

Herndon Elementary will release at 1:05pm on the following dates.

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/3ZQqThCgButjMvkN9 for each of your children who are enrolled at Herndon Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

👨🏽‍💻Online Verification Update

The Online Verification Update (OVU) packet allows parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts, and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations) for students. The enrolling parent will be able to access OVU through their SIS ParentVUE account.

The enrolling parent must have an active SIS ParentVUE Account to access and complete the OVU packet.

Parents can obtain an activation key letter to activate their SIS ParentVUE account by contacting their child’s school or by submitting a Parent Support Request form (select “SIS Parent” in the Application dropdown and “Account Activation” from the Inquiry dropdown) for assistance with this process.
