Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

What an incredible first couple of days of school we've had! It has been heartwarming to witness our children embracing new routines, reconnecting with friends, and building positive relationships with teachers, staff, and peers. Thank you for entrusting us with your children and partnering with us to make this a successful year.

There has been a change in our Interim Assistant Principal and we look forward to welcoming Ms. Marti Jo Jackson, retired FCPS principal, to Shrevewood starting tomorrow, August 23rd.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Ms. Kathy Quigley for her invaluable support since July. She was integral in supporting me, our staff, and students to ensure a strong start to this school year. Thank you, Kathy!

As a reminder, it is crucial that all families complete the Monday Early Release questionnaire in order for us to plan effectively. Please take a moment to fill out the survey as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Katie Vandawalker, Principal

Kathy Quigley, Acting Assistant Principal

Our Specialists will also be available to share about their role, curriculum, and how they support your child. The schedule for the evening is listed below:

• 6:00-6:40 Session 1 in classroom or visit the Specialists in the cafeteria

• 6:40-6:50 Transition time, visit and meet the Specialists in the cafeteria

• 6:50-7:30 Session 2* in classroom or visit the Specialists in the cafeteria

*Session 2 is offered for families who have multiple classrooms to visit. It will be a repeat of information from Session 1.

This is an adult-only event; we ask that you arrange childcare for your children so you can attend fully to the information being presented.

Fall Picture Day - September 13

Save the Date for our Fall Picture Day scheduled for Friday, September 13th.

We are in need of parent volunteers to help out. If you are interested, please email Vicky Vien at vvien@fcps.edu. Parent volunteers are eligible to receive a voucher for volunteering!

📝Opt-Out Flier

The 2024-25 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms flyer is now online. If you wish to opt your child out of any of the activities mentioned in the opt-out booklet, you must complete and return the appropriate forms to your child’s school or online through the Parent Digital Consent system.

💻Digital Resource Consent Form

We want your child to get the most out of their school experience! To open up a world of exciting activities and valuable opportunities, we need your collaboration. Please take a moment at the beginning of the school year to review and provide your consent through our easy-to-use Parent Digital Consent system. Please reach out to Kaylin Daniels if you have questions.

🖱️Schoology/ParentVUE

Students, families, and staff throughout FCPS and in our school community will use Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as our learning management system. Here is what you need to know now:

You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to login to Schoology.

Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form no later than Wednesday, August 21: https://forms.gle/9DokQm9mqsfaUpNj8 for each of your children who are enrolled at Shrevewood Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

Additional information can be found on the FCPS  Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu

Student Birthday Policy

As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.

Transportation Information

Families of bus riders should arrive to the bus stop at least 10 minutes prior to the assigned time and be patient with drivers as they acclimate to new routes and traffic patterns.  Parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the FCPS Mobile App to receive the delayed bus report. Morning route information will be available until noon.  Afternoon bus route information will be available from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.

For families who are picking up or dropping off walkers, please pick up and drop off your walkers at the blacktop by the trailers. In order to ensure the safety of our students, students will no longer be dropped off or picked up in the front of the building by Door 1.

Below are our general guidelines for entering Kiss & Ride safely and respectfully:

  1. Students need to be able to enter and exit the vehicle from the passenger side (right) of the vehicle. It is not safe to have children walk around to the driver side.
  2. Parents/Guardians are requested to remain in the vehicle as school staff will open doors.
  3. Students cannot load or unload outside of the Kiss & Ride lane that is marked with orange cones.
  4. Please be patient in the first few weeks, as logistics with student numbers may lend to longer wait times.

Please refer to the visual below for drop off and pick up information for all students.

kissandride

In order to streamline our Kiss and Ride process, you must register your child(ren), so you are assigned a Kiss and Ride number. 2023-2024 Kiss and Ride numbers will NO LONGER BE VALID. All registered families will receive a new number for 2024-2025 school year that will be associated with your child(ren).

Once you register, you will receive a laminated number to display in the front window of your car and your child(ren) will receive a number for their backpacks. We will use the numbers at dismissal in order for students to be dismissed when their ride arrives. Each family only needs to fill out the registration one time.

The Positivity Project

The 2024-25 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms flyer is now online. If you wish to opt your child out of any of the activities mentioned in the opt-out booklet, you must complete and return the appropriate forms to your child’s school or online through the Parent Digital Consent system.

p2

Shrevewood ES is a Positivity Project (P2) partner school. We achieved Green Shield status in the 2023-24 school year, among over 850 schools across 27 states. You can learn more about The Positivity Project experience at Shrevewood in this blog, “Building Character and Community.” written by two of Shrevewood's wonderful first grade teachers, Emma Brackett and Michaela Wuest.

For those families who are new to P2, we encourage you to read The Positivity Project Family Information Letter to learn all about what P2 is and the benefits of implementing it in school.

Next week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Curiosity. Curiosity means you like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything.

Curiosity is essential to our character, driving our desire for wisdom and knowledge. It keeps us engaged in stories and encourages us to try new activities or travel. Everyone experiences curiosity differently — behaviorally, intellectually, and emotionally.

People with strong curiosity are more likely to ask questions and try new things. Curiosity is a form of courage because asking questions shows we don't know something, and trying new activities risks failure. However, it's through questions and exploration that we learn and grow.

To practice and encourage curiosity at home, please visit the mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you will watch a video clip together and discuss a quote and three questions related to the strength of curiosity.

Updating Student information through SIS ParentVUE

The Online Verification Update (OVU) packet in SIS ParentVUE allows parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts, and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations). The enrolling parent can access OVU through their SIS ParentVUE account. Parents/Guardians can continue to use traditional paper forms to submit changes to Shrevewood. Paper forms can be submitted to the front office.

Beginning August 1, many of the parental consent and opt-out forms will be made available through a new Parent Digital Consent System. A parent or guardian will need to log-in using their SIS ParentVue username (email address) and password. If you have just registered your SIS ParentVUE account you will need to wait 24 hours before you can log in to the Digital Consent System.

Some forms in the system are required (like the Digital Resource Consent), while others, like the Family Education Opt-out form, are optional. If you have more than one child in FCPS, you must fill out the forms for each.

Important:  Do not use the OVU packet if your address has changed or if you moved to another FCPS school.  Contact the front office directly to complete address updates or to withdraw and transfer your student to the new school

School Meals and Free/ Reduced Lunch Applications

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast will be $1.75.  Lunch will be $3.25, milk $0.60.  Money can be added to your child(ren)’s accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com.  You can also write a check to Shrevewood Food Services and deliver it to our Food Services Manager at Open House.   During the school year, you can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://linqconnect.com/public/menu/ESSF44.

Free and Reduced-Price Status

Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September.   A new application must be filled out each new school year and forms are available  online now: https://www.fcps.edu/frm.  Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September. Call (703) 813-4800 if you need help. This must be completed for eligible students to receive free meals.

New Benchmark Curriculum

As part of the FCPS Equitable Access to Literacy plan, FCPS is changing the way we teach reading to our K-6 students! Starting this school year, we will have a new curriculum for Language Arts which will help our students become better readers. Because of this new curriculum, all of our FCPS teachers who help our students learn how to read will have the same high-quality materials and lesson plans. When a student can read well, they do better in all of their classes and are more likely to graduate high school.

Immunizations

In Virginia, it is required by law that students have certain immunizations in order to attend school. Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Regulation 2101 support this requirement. We encourage parents/caregivers to check with their family healthcare provider now to ensure their child is up to date with their required immunizations.
