A Note from the Principal

Dear Daniels Run Families,

Thank you for your warm greeting during our Question-and-Answer session this week, on the welcome walk, and at our preschool/kindergarten open house. This is such a friendly and caring community, and I am so happy to be a part of it. The Daniels Run staff has been working diligently to get classrooms and lesson plans ready for next week. We can't wait to have all our students back at school!

School starts Monday, August 19th. As with Daniels Run tradition, families are welcome to walk their students to class on the first day of school. I will be in the cafeteria from 8:45-9:30 AM if you would like to stop by and meet me.

On the second day of school, we ask that all students use their regular method of transportation and that parents say good-bye to their child before the student enters the school building. We will have plenty of staff outdoors and lining the halls to make sure students get to their classrooms. It is important that students learn their regular routine as early as possible in the school year.

I would like to thank our wonderful PTA for providing breakfast to the staff on Thursday. I encourage all our families and staff members to support our PTA by becoming a member. It is a great way to be involved in your child's education.

Please make sure to mark your calendars for all of our school events: Back-to-School Night, the family picnic, the first PTA meeting, and Field Day.

I look forward to meeting many of you on the first day of school.

Warm regards,

Susan Mullen

Principal, Daniels Run Elementary School

Kiss and Ride Information

Welcome to the new school year! This is to inform you of our Kiss and Ride procedures for the end of the day.

1) During the first week of school we will be giving out a Kiss and Ride card.

2) Please place the card on the passenger side dashboard of your vehicle with your child's name and grade level.

3) All students will wait in the cafeteria to be called to the Kiss and Ride loop of cars as parents arrive. Students will be called starting at 3:45pm when the dismissal bell rings.

Beginning September 3rd if you do not have the card on your dashboard you will be asked to park and come in to the office to pick up your child. Please be sure to get as many Kiss and Ride cards as you need to ensure that all your vehicles can display the card.

  • As a reminder students should only be entering and exiting cars from the passenger side of the vehicle. Also students will be dismissed to a vehicle ONLY. Please do not walk up to the cafeteria exit door to pick up your child.
  • We thank you in advance for your flexibility and help with ensuring the safety of all the children.
  • No pets are allowed on school grounds.

Opt-Out Annual Notice

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2024-25 Opt-Out Booklets.

We’re Eager to Welcome You Back to School!

As summer winds down, our school and staff are looking forward to welcoming students back to our classrooms. Before the first day of school, make sure you have completed the following:

  • Sign up for SIS ParentVUE
  • Update Immunizations and Records
  • Update your Contact Information
  • Prepare for Meals at School
  • Bookmark the School Year Calendar
  • Stay Connected!

1) Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE

Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar [add contact info] if you need a code.

Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices

2) Update Immunizations and Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

3) Update Your Contact Information

To be sure you receive important information from your schools, update your phone numbers and/or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.

4) Prepare for Meals at School

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today.

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically as needed, and families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account.

  • Apply for Free and Reduced-Priced MealsThe application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2024-25 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

5) Bookmark the School Year Calendar

Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:

  • Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
  • Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
  • Days marked in pink are holidays for students, but working days for teachers and staff.

Note: Some holidays and observances, such as Eid al-Fitr, may shift and the calendar may be adjusted.

6) Stay Connected!
