Dear Coates Families,
I hope that you have been enjoying all that summer has to offer and you are looking forward to the new school year. Staff and teachers have been busy planning for your return and working hard to make sure the school year is filled with exciting and engaging learning opportunities.
We know many of you are anticipating your child's classroom placement for this school year. All classroom placements will be available in ParentVue by Thursday, August 15th. Additionally, class placements will be posted and available at our Open House/Resource Fair/Back-to-School Block Party Event.
We can’t wait to welcome all of you back to Coates with our 3rd annual Back-to-School Block Party on Thursday, 8/17 from 5-8pm! Doors will open for our Resource Fair at 5pm followed by our Open House from 6-7pm. After that, we will be moving it all outside for some music and food as we celebrate the beginning of a new school year. We can't wait to see you later next week!
This year we have created a one-pager linked to our website called the Family Information Hub to assist all of our families with beginning of the school year preparations. You will find all the necessary tasks to complete, along with plenty of information to keep you connected throughout the year. You will want to make sure that you gain access to ParentVue right away in order to access all teacher and transportation information. We ask that you take the time to familiarize your children with their bus stops and please bear with us on the first few days, while we take our time to manage a safe and orderly dismissal for our students. Please take some time to review all these resources and give us a call in the main office at 703-713-3000 if you have any questions.
We are looking forward to seeing you all back soon!
Sincerely,
Paul Basdekis
Principal
L.L. Coates Elementary School

As you may have heard, the Virginia Literacy Act requires Elementary Teachers (classroom, special education, and ESOL) to complete approximately 27 hours of training focused on the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy during the 2024-2025 school year.
As a result, Fairfax County Public Schools has planned seven early release Mondays starting in September. Please note the dates and times for your calendars listed below.
Coates will dismiss at 1:00 PM on the following days:
September 23; October 28; November 25, February 24; March 17, April 28 and May 19
Please visit FCPS' webpage for detailed information about early release Mondays.
All multilingual learners and their families are invited to attend a summit today, Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 5-8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School. The summit will be primarily geared for secondary multilingual learners, but all are welcome to attend. The goal of the summit is to foster an environment of empowerment where multilingual students and their families can establish meaningful connections, engage in active listening, and openly share their experiences, cultivating mutual support and a deeper understanding of educational pathways within FCPS.
This event will begin with a table fair showcasing many opportunities available within FCPS and the wider community that support paths to graduation and future careers for students. Additionally, a keynote will be presented by Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya who will share a message about the power of community and resilience. A student panel will dialogue with Dr. Zelaya following the keynote.

As summer winds down, our school and staff are looking forward to welcoming students back to our classrooms. Before the first day of school, make sure you have completed the following:
Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE
Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar [add contact info] if you need a code.
Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.
Need help creating an account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.
Update Your Contact Information
To be sure you receive important information from your schools, update your phone numbers and/or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.
Update Immunizations and Records
Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE to see what immunizations your child has recorded.
Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services.
Remember to request your child’s immunization record and bring that to the school’s front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website.
Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:
- Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
- Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
- Days marked in pink are holidays for students, but working days for teachers and staff.
Note: Some holidays and observances, such as Eid al-Fitr, may shift and the calendar may be adjusted.
