Welcome Assistant Principal Shari Peters!

Congratulations to Shari Peters, who has been named as our new assistant principal! Shari has served Key MS as an Algebra teacher and Math Department Chair. Previously, she served as an AVID Site Coordinator, Academic Principal, math teacher, and 6th grade teacher. Here is a note from Ms. Peters:

Key Community,

Over the past two years, I have been honored to be a part of the Key team as an Algebra 1 teacher and mathematics department chair. As I continue my path as an educator, I am excited to join our team as the new Assistant Principal here at Key! I began my journey in education in 2007 as a middle school math teacher and over the years have taught in both middle and high school and have served as an academic principal at a middle school; middle school has a special place in my heart. Additionally, I taught as an AVID Elective teacher for many years. I received my bachelor’s degree in childhood education, my master’s degree in school leadership and administration, and I am currently working on completing a doctoral degree in school leadership and administration. As a military spouse, I have had the opportunity to work across the country and am excited to continue to share this unique perspective and experience with our learning community and families. These past two years at Key have provided me the opportunity to work with an amazing school community for which I am extremely grateful and excited to continue working alongside of. I am passionate about continuing to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment for both students and staff. My goal is to collaborate closely with teachers, staff, families, students, and our community to ensure we continue to provide the best possible educational experience and environment for our students. I look forward to continuing to build strong relationships with our Key community and spreading joy throughout Key as we begin this new year!

Shari Peters

Assistant Principal

Vaccinations

Dear Key MS Families,

As we look ahead to the new school year, I would like to remind caregivers that immunizations are required for all students in order to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy.

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, you may make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services

Remember to request your child’s immunization record and bring that to your school’s front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please contact Vickie Beruete at vberuete@fcps.edu. Be wise and immunize!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

AFTD

Away for the Day Update

Students will be required to store all electronics in their locker during the school day from 7:30am - 2:15pm.

Students will not be allowed to have electronic devices with them during the school day.

Devices will be confiscated and held for parent pick-up for students who do not comply with the Away for the Day procedure. Unclaimed devices will be returned to students on the last day of each week during dismissal at 2:15pm.

FCPS Cell Phone Policy and Implementation

  • At the May 9 School Board meeting, the School Board adopted the SY 2024-25 SR&R (Regulation 2601.38). They also passed a follow-on motion directing the superintendent to develop and implement a strategic communications plan to inform stakeholders of the expectations contained in the SR&R with respect to cell phone usage.
  • Cell phone use expectations in schools remain unchanged from the 2022-23 SR&R. The division will be communicating expectations to families more regularly this year. Schools should also support this effort.

First Day of School!

Monday, August 19 - First Day of School! We start bright and early at 7:30 am! Please start having your child wake up earlier each day from now until school starts so they are ready to go on the first day.

Laptop

Dear Families,

We hope you had a wonderful summer! This is a reminder for students who need to return laptops from summer school.

Please return the laptop and charger, labeled if possible, to the main office between the hours of 9 AM and 1 PM, Monday through Thursday, and from 9 AM to 12 PM on Friday.

Additionally, students who have not returned their laptop from the 2023-2024 school year will not be assigned a new laptop until the old laptop has been returned. These should also be returned to the main office.

Please note that the main office is currently being painted, so the doors may not be as actively monitored. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Thanks,

Brent Litherland

New Attendance Reporting Feature Launching in ParentVUE for 2024-25 School Year

FCPS is excited to announce an important update beginning with the start of the 2024-25 school year. Parents and caregivers will have the option to submit their student’s attendance directly through ParentVUE starting the first day of school, August 19, 2024.  This new feature aims to streamline the attendance reporting process and enhance communication between parents and schools. This change will make it more convenient for parents and schools to manage students' attendance while ensuring the highest level of security.

ParentVUE offers a more secure and reliable platform for managing students' attendance information.  ParentVUE will replace the current Attendance Forms, which will be discontinued at the end of the 2023-24 school year.

ParentVUE access and assistance will be provided during Back-to-School events.

Class Schedules for the 2024-2025 School Year

In preparation for next school year, we would like to set your student up for success! In the spring, students made their course requests for the 2024-2025 school year. You are able to view your child’s current course selections in ParentVUE/SIS. As a reminder, students may be identified for support classes which would take priority over elective choices. 2024-2025 class schedules are available in ParentVUE/SIS and at our Open House the week before school starts.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss course selections, please contact your child’s school counselor after August 12.
