Welcome back, Dragons!
We are thrilled to once again fill our hallways with the laughter and footsteps of our students. This year promises to be wonderful. However, I would be remiss if I did not share some of the exciting things that happened over the summer.
Thanks to a grant from Friends of Reston, 32 students received free swim lessons after their summer SOAR programs. Students enjoyed lessons from Reston Association swim instructors and had exclusive access to the Dogwood pool for two afternoons a week. This is our second year providing this opportunity, and we extend our gratitude to the Friends of Reston, Reston Association and Andy Sigle, one of our family liaisons, for making it possible.
Additionally, we offered a free robotics camp, STEAM@thegarage for seven rising middle schoolers from Dogwood ES. Through our partnership with A Little Bit of Hope, Microsoft provided a week-long robotics camp for our students. Students learned the history and how to create code, ethical ways to use AI, and worked on presentations to pitch ideas in the work sites.
We are excited to announce we are going to start a PTA here at Dogwood, but we need YOU. Please see the PTA table when you come for Open House and Back to School night and let us know if you are interested in participating. This is a fantastic opportunity to have your voice heard and to impact the experiences your children have at our school.
As noted below, we look forward to our Dogwood Visits on Thursday, August 15th and Open House on Friday, August 16th. See below for details. We love seeing you.

Popsicles on the Playground
We are excited to invite our rising kindergarten families to our Popsicles on the Playground event! This special gathering is a great opportunity for you and your children to meet their classroom teacher, get to know their new classmates, connect with our administrators, and enjoy some refreshing popsicles while exploring our playground.

Time: 4:00 PM
Location: Dogwood Playground
This event aims to create a warm and welcoming environment for our kindergarten families as we kick off the school year together. It's a chance for both parents and children to start building connections within our school community.

Dogwood Visits
Your child’s teacher will be coming by your home to say “hello” on August 15th between 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM. This special visit is an opportunity for you, your child, your family and your child’s teacher to connect and welcome you to the 2024-25 school year. Teams of 2-3 staff members will go to each house between those hours. If you have a code on your apartment complex door or you will not be available please call our office at 703-262-3100 and let us know. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Dogwood Open House
We are thrilled to invite our Dogwood Dragons to our upcoming Open House event! This is a wonderful opportunity for you and your children to meet their teacher and explore our school community before the new academic year begins.
Date: Friday, August 16th
Time: Pre- K and Kindergarten students and families: can arrive at 1:00- 2:00 PM
1st- 6th Grade: 1:30 - 2:30 PM
Location: Dogwood Elementary School
Our aim during Open House is to ensure that you and your children feel welcomed, meet their teachers, see the classrooms and get excited about what the year will bring!
We look forward to seeing you at the Open House and beginning the new school year. If you have any questions beforehand, please reach out to the Dogwood Main Office 703-262-3100.
Monday, August 19, is the first day of school. See the complete school year calendar. Our building opens at 8:35 AM with the instructional day beginning at 8:50 AM. Students are welcome to enter the building and have their breakfast in the cafeteria starting at 8:20 AM.
More information can be found on our Dogwood Elementary School site including our school supplies list. You are also welcome to reach out to our Main Office 703-262-3100 for any questions you may have.

Labor Day
Friday, August 30, and Monday, September 2, is the Labor Day holiday for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.

Reston school food pantry hits milestone in fight against hunger

Support Your Child’s Success in SIS ParentVUE
Signing up for a SIS ParentVUE account helps you to support your child’s academic success. Caregivers can view important information in ParentVUE such as attendance, grades, progress reports, and assessment scores.
Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. A SIS ParentVUE app is available for Apple and Android devices.
