Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

As we approach the start of the 2024-2025 school year, our excitement is building! Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming our new staff members during their school-based orientation. We're eagerly anticipating the return of our full team on Monday and are hard at work ensuring everything is ready and in place.

A special shout-out goes to our incredibly dedicated custodial team, who have been tirelessly working all summer to make sure our school is sparkling clean. We truly appreciate their hard work and commitment.

Our Wise Words newsletter is packed with essential back-to-school information, and early next week, we’ll be sending out a more detailed email to help ensure a smooth and successful start to the new school year.

Sincerely,

Katie Vandawalker, Principal

Kathy Quigley, Acting Assistant Principal

Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form no later than Wednesday, August 21: https://forms.gle/9DokQm9mqsfaUpNj8 for each of your children who are enrolled at Shrevewood Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

Additional information can be found on the FCPS  Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu

PTA First Day Donuts

pta

If this is your first year at Shrevewood or your last, DONUT WORRY. We're planning to welcome everyone back to school with donuts, muffins, juice, and coffee. As you drop your kids off for the first day of school, please stop by to say hello. If you're willing to contribute, please sign up here. Items can be brought to the PTA table near the Shrevewood blacktop between 8:45am-9:15am on August 19th. Hope to see you there!

Kiss & Ride

In order to streamline our Kiss and Ride process, you must register your child(ren), so you are assigned a Kiss and Ride number. 2023-2024 Kiss and Ride numbers will NO LONGER BE VALID. All registered families will receive a new number for 2024-2025 school year that will be associated with your child(ren).

Once you register, you will receive a laminated number to display in the front window of your car and your child(ren) will receive a number for their backpacks. We will use the numbers at dismissal in order for students to be dismissed when their ride arrives. Each family only needs to fill out the registration one time.

In order to receive your Kiss and Ride number at Open House on Friday, August 16, please complete the Kiss and Ride registration by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13.

Updating Student information through SIS ParentVUE

The Online Verification Update (OVU) packet in SIS ParentVUE allows parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts, and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations). The enrolling parent can access OVU through their SIS ParentVUE account. Parents/Guardians can continue to use traditional paper forms to submit changes to Shrevewood. Paper forms can be submitted to the front office.

Beginning August 1, many of the parental consent and opt-out forms will be made available through a new Parent Digital Consent System. A parent or guardian will need to log-in using their SIS ParentVue username (email address) and password. If you have just registered your SIS ParentVUE account you will need to wait 24 hours before you can log in to the Digital Consent System.

Some forms in the system are required (like the Digital Resource Consent), while others, like the Family Education Opt-out form, are optional. If you have more than one child in FCPS, you must fill out the forms for each.

Important:  Do not use the OVU packet if your address has changed or if you moved to another FCPS school.  Contact the front office directly to complete address updates or to withdraw and transfer your student to the new school

School Meals and Free/ Reduced Lunch Applications

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast will be $1.75.  Lunch will be $3.25, milk $0.60.  Money can be added to your child(ren)’s accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com.  You can also write a check to Shrevewood Food Services and deliver it to our Food Services Manager at Open House.   During the school year, you can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://linqconnect.com/public/menu/ESSF44.

Free and Reduced-Price Status

Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September.   A new application must be filled out each new school year and forms are available  online now: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/food-and-nutrition-programs/free-and-reduced-price-meals.  Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September. Call (703) 813-4800 if you need help. This must be completed for eligible students to receive free meals.

The Marshall Pyramid principals are committed to cultivating a culture of belonging in which all students are valued and their strengths and interests are developed to achieve academic excellence. We model what we ask our staff and students to do with each other as principals.

  • We collaborate and problem solve.
  • We focus on creating trusting partnerships.
  • We make connections and build relationships.

Each school in the Marshall Pyramid is actively committed to building a pre-K through 12th grade framework for our students that embodies educational excellence and a culture of belonging.  We look forward to continuing to partner with our students, staff, families, and community in this endeavor and wish everyone a continued safe and happy school year.

New Benchmark Curriculum

As part of the FCPS Equitable Access to Literacy plan, FCPS is changing the way we teach reading to our K-6 students! Starting this school year, we will have a new curriculum for Language Arts which will help our students become better readers. Because of this new curriculum, all of our FCPS teachers who help our students learn how to read will have the same high-quality materials and lesson plans. When a student can read well, they do better in all of their classes and are more likely to graduate high school.

Immunizations

In Virginia, it is required by law that students have certain immunizations in order to attend school. Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Regulation 2101 support this requirement. We encourage parents/caregivers to check with their family healthcare provider now to ensure their child is up to date with their required immunizations.
