Hello Mustang Families,
August is here and we are so excited to kickoff the start of the 24-25 school year in a few weeks!
Below are some important updates about upcoming events and announcements that I would like to share with you prior to the first day of school. Additionally, next week I will be mailing all MUES families a welcome back letter. As you read over this important mailing as well as read through the information below, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with whatever questions you might have.
I look forward to seeing everyone at Open House on Friday, August 16th!

This year’s annual Open House is scheduled for Friday, August 16th from 10:30-12:00 PM. Please visit us at school during this timeframe to meet your child’s teacher(s), meet our specialists, as well as other staff members of the McNair Upper ES community. This is also a great time for you to drop your child’s school supplies off to their classroom.
McNair ES' Open House will be happening at the same time so that families are able to go to both campuses during this timeframe. The event will conclude in both buildings at 12:00 PM, so please plan your visit accordingly.
If your child requires medication during the school day, both Ms. Dorian, Public Health Nurse, and Ms. Nam, School Health Assistant, will be on-site during Open House to accept your child's medication and the necessary medical paperwork.
All multilingual learners and their families are invited to attend a summit on Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 5-8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School. The summit will be primarily geared for secondary multilingual learners, but all are welcome to attend. The goal of the summit is to foster an environment of empowerment where multilingual students and their families can establish meaningful connections, engage in active listening, and openly share their experiences, cultivating mutual support and a deeper understanding of educational pathways within FCPS.
This event will begin with a table fair showcasing many opportunities available within FCPS and the wider community that support paths to graduation and future careers for students. Additionally, a keynote will be presented by Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya who will share a message about the power of community and resilience. A student panel will dialogue with Dr. Zelaya following the keynote.
Refreshments and light food will be served. Language and childcare services will be available. All secondary level multilingual learners have been invited centrally from FCPS via email. Registration is open for students, families, or staff planning to attend.
If you still need to purchase school supplies for your Mustang, this weekend is the perfect weekend to do so because it is tax free weekend in Virginia. Families can save on the following school-related items:
- Qualified school supplies - $20 or less per item
- Qualified clothing and footwear - $100 or less per item

This year’s annual Back to School Night will be held on the evening of Thursday, September 5th. We will offer two sessions- Session #1: 6:00-6:45 p.m. and Session #2: 6:45-7:30 p.m. Please select only one to attend.
Classroom teachers will share information with families about the grade-level curriculum; including state and division-wide changes, your child will be learning this school year and specific grade-level events such as field trips your child may attend this upcoming school year. You will also hear about school wide, grade level, and classroom practices and expectations your child’s teacher will employ this school year to support them. This is a great opportunity to begin establishing your partnership with your child’s homeroom teacher to support their success this school year. It is important that families plan to attend one of our session offerings.
